Gaming Secrets Revealed:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

THE BUZZ: In the upcoming issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine senior writer Paul Semel spoke one-on-one with Deus Ex: Human Revolution game director Jean-Francois Dugas about some of the title’s lesser-known facts, including the influences that the team’s real-life musical tastes had on the final product:

“I’ve been a big fan of Iron Maiden for 30 years,” Dugas revealed. “After talking to one of my coworkers, who’s also a Maiden fan, we decided to name one of the prostitutes in the game Charlotte, after the song ‘Charlotte the Harlot’ from Maiden’s first album.”

But the heavy metal inspirations didn’t stop there.

“There’s a big hanger in one part of the game, and if you manage to hack the computer inside it and read the e-mails you’ll realize that the e-mails are alluding to the lyrics of the song ‘Hanger 18’ by Megadeth.”

Also, some of the familiar sites from the game started out with a slightly different look and feel according to Dugas, including the anti-augmentation group, originally called Humanity First. Unfortunately, the team had to scramble once Square Enix’s lawyers informed them of a real life group operating under the same name. “We had to change it throughout the entire game,” Dugas explained to EGM. “It was everywhere. And because we’d used motion capture for the dialogue, we had to replace it in the script with something similar so that the mouth movements would match.” And with that, Humanity Front was born.

EGM’s TAKE: Be sure to pick up the new issue to read more top secret info about what went into the making of this futuristic sci-fi thriller.
