Last we checked in with Jackie Estacado, demon-limbed star of the Darkness II, he was displaying his new “quad-wielding” skills. Behind a pair of pistols and two ass-kicking appendages, he reduced Mafioso thugs to pulpy, pavement-staining smears. Eager to show off the sequel’s enemy-eviscerating executions, 2K Games intentionally pitted us against low-level goons we could effortlessly dispatch with gore-soaked style to spare. READ MORE

You’d be hard-pressed to find a game that matches the debauchery and excess of Saints Row: The Third. When you go shopping this holiday season, think back to the days when you and three friends would game together on the same console. Think about how fun those experiences were—when you could actually hit your buddy for being a jerk or high-five and celebrate with an actual, in-person human being. Today’s online multiplayer’s great, but it can’t re-create the atmosphere of being in the same room as your buddies. That’s why it’s refreshing to see a game that intentionally bucks that trend, saying, “Hey, bring some friends. Let’s have a good time.” READ MORE

It’s rare that you see a game revolving around motion controls that also attempts to feature a deep, fleshed-out story like Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest. Unfortunately, you all too often see these types of games fall into the same gameplay traps that this one falls into as well—missteps that take away from the overall experience. READ MORE

Of course, you’ve also got the games you typically tire of quickly and don’t pull out again unless you’ve got company over and are looking to goof off—and Carnival Island is a perfect example. Growing up, Burt Reynolds films were always a guilty pleasure of mine, and few have inspired more “someone ought to make a game outta that movie” chatter than the legendary Cannonball Run series. And while EA didn’t exactly shell out the cash to make an actual licensed product, they did the next best thing and ripped off the core concept, fused it with The Fast and the Furious, and crammed the concept into the 18th entry in the Need for Speed series: The Run. Another Nintendo mainstay’s joined the 25th-anniversary club, and he’s got a brand-new game that pays tribute in its own special way: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Featuring classic elements, characters, and enemies from many of the best Zelda games from the past—with plenty of nuances to make it its own standalone title—Skyward Sword’s conceived as a prequel to Ocarina of Time, a title not only considered by many to be the best Zelda game of all time, but also one of the best videogames of all time. Those are some pretty heavy Iron Boots to fill. READ MORE
