Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest

By
Posted on November 15, 2011 AT 09:01am
It’s rare that you see a game revolving around motion controls that also attempts to feature a deep, fleshed-out story like Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest. Unfortunately, you all too often see these types of games fall into the same gameplay traps that this one falls into as well—missteps that take away from the overall experience. READ MORE

Carnival Island

When it comes to motion-controlled games, the experiences geared at casual audiences usually end up as the most polished, user-friendly products. Of course, you’ve also got the games you typically tire of quickly and don’t pull out again unless you’ve got company over and are looking to goof off—and Carnival Island is a perfect example. Need for Speed: The Run

By

Growing up, Burt Reynolds films were always a guilty pleasure of mine, and few have inspired more “someone ought to make a game outta that movie” chatter than the legendary Cannonball Run series. And while EA didn’t exactly shell out the cash to make an actual licensed product, they did the next best thing and ripped off the core concept, fused it with The Fast and the Furious, and crammed the concept into the 18th entry in the Need for Speed series: The Run. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

By

Role-playing games just ain’t what they used to be. The days of pulling together a party, trudging through turn-based combat systems, and suffering through 10-minute cutscenes in one’s quest to save the universe are definitely on the way out, and while some may lament the loss of this tried-and-true style of swords, sorcery, and storytelling, there’s no doubt that Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series has done a lot to change the way we see the genre, focusing on open-world technology, real-time combat, and an impressive emphasis on freedom of choice. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

By

I’m not too keen on the idea of really shooting another man in the head with an AK-47 in the horrific heat of war, but isn’t it a wonder how our fantasies take us to some pretty heavy territory? I have a terrific time being a soldier in a world war in Modern Warfare 3. Some people hate the idea of a game like this, and I kind of understand where they’re coming from. But I’m not here to debate the rights and wrongs of war in our videogames—I’m here to proclaim Modern Warfare 3 the most intense, the most convincing first-person shooter I’ve ever played. EyePet and Friends

By
Posted on November 8, 2011 AT 12:00am
Over the years, the handy virtual pet has offered many children the chance of owning a fantastic creature without having to clean up the mess. I remember when I was younger and I was suckered into the Tamagotchi craze. And so now, many years later, we’ve seen this virtual-pet genre evolve to the point that we’ve got motion-control gimmick games that basically serve the same purpose. And so, with that, we’re looking at the second iteration of Sony’s virtual-pet time- and money-waster in EyePet & Friends. READ MORE

Batman: Arkham City: Nightwing DLC

By
Posted on November 3, 2011 AT 01:19pm
So, with Batman: Arkham City featuring Catwoman and Robin as playable challenge map characters, it would only make sense that the next member of the Bat-family to be featured would be the original sidekick for the Caped Crusader in the form of Grayson. But is he worth the $7 DLC price-tag (560 Microsoft Points) he comes with or should he simply retreat back to the shadows? READ MORE

Battlefield 3

By

One needn’t look further than their Twitter feed to get the consensus on Battlefield 3. Considered a potential Call of Duty-killer since EA unveiled that eye-searing single-player demo earlier this year, the publisher’s bid to take down Activision’s FPS juggernaut has been described as both awful and awesome—the former referring to the single-player campaign, the latter describing the multiplayer content. Sonic Generations

By
Posted on November 1, 2011 AT 09:00am
For 20 years, Sonic the Hedgehog has been the fastest videogame character in the world. Sega’s original Sonic series managed to compete with Nintendo’s heavy hitter, Mario, because it gave players not only speed, but also multiple paths through every level. This core’s held over the years, even though the move to the third dimension hasn’t fared as well for the blue furball. Sonic: Generations brings the old and the new together, literally pitting the original 2D and current 3D Sonic in a tale intended to make original and current Sonic fans happy. Unfortunately, it only works half the time. READ MORE

Pyre Night in New Marais brings out all the weirdos: party girls wearing masks and horns, goths trying to get their cool drunk on, and vampires wanting to resurrect some seriously evil vamp queen named Bloody Mary. Can Cole quench her blood lust in this standalone side story? READ MORE

House of the Dead: Overkill: Extended Cut

By
Posted on October 26, 2011 AT 06:30am
Back in 2009, an arcade classic was in desperate need of a makeover—and, of all places, it came from the Wii, surprisingly enough. The House of the Dead: Overkill served as a prequel for the immensely popular lightgun House of the Dead games and explained, sort of, both the origins of Agent G (the series’ main protagonist) and the zombie-causing formula he’s fought for 15 years—all wrapped in a ’70s B-movie setting with over-the-top voice acting, tons of sex and swearing, and cheesy moments galore. Looking to capitalize on that surprising success, Sega’s ported the game over to the PS3 with some upgrades in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle with a new audience. READ MORE

The Cursed Crusade

By
Posted on October 26, 2011 AT 06:00am
The Cursed Crusade revolves around the idea that those who commit heinous crimes against their fellow men—whether in the name of God or not—see their bloodline marked for generations, and that their descent to hell is guaranteed. I think this game may suffer from the fate it laid out for several of its in-game characters. READ MORE

Batman: Arkham City

By

Comic book fans are easily some of the most rabid fans out there. Maybe it’s because of the history, maybe it’s the appeal of the characters, maybe it’s because of a lack of social skills developed in their mom’s basement, but whatever the reason, whenever something features comic book characters, the fans tear it apart. Well, good luck finding fault with this one. And trust me, being a fan myself, I tried. Check out our full review of Batman: Arkham City here! READ MORE

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One

By
Posted on October 18, 2011 AT 09:00am
It’s exceedingly appropriate that this week’s EGMi: The Digital Magazine highlights our favorite arcade classics, because Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One would be right at home at Chuck E. Cheese’s circa 1992 alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, The Simpsons, and X-Men. Few games in the two decades since have truly captured the hectic, nonstop, free-for-all multiplayer destruction of those experiences, but All 4 One offers the same teamwork, camaraderie, and competitiveness—all that’s missing is a disturbing animatronic rat peering menacingly from above. Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

By

When a zombie outbreak hit Fortune City, the quiet, stoic Chuck Greene saved the day. But he was no Frank West—the photojournalist extraordinaire who saved the Willamette Parkview Mall in the original Dead Rising. Greene didn’t tote around the swagger, charisma, or camera we know and love from the original zombie bloodfest back in ’06. So now that the spotlight is back on Frank West, how does he hold up all this time later in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record? READ MORE

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

By
Posted on October 11, 2011 AT 11:58am
My tastes may trend toward anime-infused RPGs, but whether it's the space duels in Star Fox on the N64, the legendary humans-vs.-Kilrathi matchups in Wing Commander on the PC, or the cartoony jet action of Airforce Delta Strike on the PS2, I’ve always loved a good dogfight. And I’ve certainly enjoyed the Ace Combat series in the past—Namco Bandai’s formerly distinctively Japanese dogfighter that’s now taking a more realistic, Western-inspired bent along the lines of Call of Duty. So, how does this new Ace Combat stack up? READ MORE
