Developed by Daedalic Entertainment and published by Rondomedia, Edna and Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes is the award-winning point-and-click PC adventure game from the creators of Deponia, The Whispered World, and Edna and Harvey: The Breakout. In the same vein as those games, Edna and Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes features a unique cartoon art style and requires a bit of patience and creative thinking to traverse. Button mashers need not apply, as the appeal of this game stems from its subversively creepy yet appealing characters.
As our young heroine Lilli, players are initially tasked with simply helping to tackle a series of objectives at the convent where she is under the strict thumb of Mother Superior. That all changes when Lilli’s best friend Edna disappears, and it is up to you to solve the mystery. There are plenty of colorful characters and areas to interact with on your quest, many of which will induce a few head scratches to try and figure out. It’s a story-driven experience that rewards players with more quirky narrative after each epiphany is reached by talking to NPCs and finding the right combination of items to use on landmarks in surrounding environments.
The sense of wonderment and curiosity required to play Edna and Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes is its biggest drawback, as spoiled players are not overtly spoon fed the answers they seek to quickly advance to the next part of the story. Frustration crept up on me the first time I played this game, mostly due to my own childish longing for instant satisfaction. After taking a step back and carefully combing over each area for clues, puzzles started becoming much easier to solve. If you find yourself stuck in a certain area, stick to your most devious instincts- they tend to lead you along the correct path.
For fans of point-and-click adventures, this game will be a welcome addition to your game collection. Don’t let the difficulty curve overburden you, and you too will find that there is a curiously fun time to be had among the talking bunnies, evil doctors, and censor-gnomes found in Edna and Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes.
Edna and Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes is available now on Steam.
