Lollipop Chainsaw Is A Fun Romp Even With Poor Game Mechanics

Would you take my review seriously if I told you that we spent most of the night trying to unlock the achievement for looking up Juliet Starling‘s skirt in Lollipop Chainsaw?  Yes, it’s true – in fact there are plenty of achievements for things like that – it is quite a vulgar game after all!

Lollipop Chainsaw offers much in the way of random fun – there is a CONSTANT stream of action and violence with no shortage of zombies introduced in the game each type more violent than the last!  There are football player zombies, zombies on fire, zombies with dynamite strapped to them and a boss battle or new character introduced just about every 10 minutes.  Lollipop Chainsaw was written by James Gunn who is known for making horror films full of cheese and gore in the name of fun – we asked him about working with Suda51 in this interview from Spike TV’s VGA 2011 here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVb7vtMOLYY).

Unfortunately Lollipop Chainsaw offers VERY little in the way of freedom.  For every zombie you hack down or decapitate you’ll find yourself wondering what’s on the other side of the wall, tree or door.  The game is so scripted at some points we couldn’t even figure out when a cut scene began and when it ended.  You’ll lose control of the camera more often then you want – which is a drag because the combat and frame rate is rather smooth during all the action.

We’ve provided a ton of Lollipop Chainsaw gameplay to check out to see for yourself.  The game has excellent characteristics and marketing – making it a prospect for consumers on the store shelves but be warned you are looking at a single-player experience that will last you about a weekend of play (if that) for a full priced game.  We played on the Xbox 360 with gameplay/commentary by Robert Welkner.
