South Park The Stick of Truth First Impressions E3 Expo

In the great THQ dissolution, there was one game above all others that I wanted to be picked up – South Park: The Stick of Truth. Thankfully, Ubisoft has taken up the baton and showed off their acquisition at E3 this year. After seeing this year’s demo and knowing it’s being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, South Park: The Stick of Truth quickly became one of my favorite games of E3 2013.

As the new kid in South Park, you are immediately roped into participating in the Live Action Role Playing (LARP) game the kids are playing. Unknowingly, you have joined the side of Cartman’s evil human empire against Stan and Kyle’s Elf Kingdom. The two sides are fighting over the ultimate weapon: The Stick of Truth. It is now time to join the epic quest to be cool.

This RPG has plenty to offer – from action sequences to puzzle solving to battling. The best part of game is how the game is both completely absurd and rooted in the reality of the universe. You have spells as you would in any RPG, but an ice spell is simply dumping a cooler full of ice and water on your enemy. Fireballs are farts cupped in your hand and thrown through fire. Like I said, much of this is completely absurd and yet, hilarious.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is full of the references and humor of the South Park universe. This could make the game very divisive with its audience. For people like me who are fans of the show, this game is right up my alley, but I’m sure there are plenty of individuals that this game will not appeal to. But if you want to find out how to learn the shrinking skills of the underpants gnomes or use the alien probe in your backside or use your feces as a weapon or go on an epic quest with Butters at your side, then this game is for you.

To me, this is the best of all worlds. Being written and voiced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and developed by Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout New Vegas, Dungeon Siege III), South Park: The Stick of Truth is going to be an outstanding RPG I simply can’t wait to play.
