Not long ago I was contacted by James Petty from Action Mobile Games asking me to check out a zombie game they were developing for iOS. I admit I was skeptical at first. There are hundreds of zombie survival games on iOS and they are all pretty much carbon copies of each but. I was wrong.
2013: Infected Wars is different. Not just because it uses the Unreal engine so it has a “full-seized” game quality but there is co-op miltiplayer too. To my knowledge, this has not really been done before and it was a real drawn for me. The ability to know just game solo is a refreshing change from the usual run-of-the-mill mobile zombie games. Add to that well executed graphics, a game that take some real skill to beat and you have a recipe for fun.
The gameplay is fairly simple. You are a mercenary and you need to find those few survivors that are not trying to eat you alive. You shoot your way through different areas, collecting much needed ammo or items, and just try to survive. You control the game with two thumbs, one on each side of the screen, right for shooting and left for movement. They were intuitive and easy to get used to though it will feel a bit odd at first. The atmosphere will become more intense as you fight your way out of areas. The more zombies you kill, the more noise you make and the more blood that is splattered through the environment — the more zombies you will attract. It gives the game an entertaining sense of urgency. It will also keep you from doing too much exploring so keep your eyes open for those health packs and other items.
Using the Unreal engine allowed Action Mobile Games to create environments that you just do not see in mobile games. They are finely detailed and well designed. There will be hazards and zombies aplenty. A few times I found myself admiring just how many zombies would be on my screen at once without bogging down the game. I managed to play through a couple of areas and I know I have barely begun to scratch the surface of the game. If you are anything like me, you will want to try out the co-op mulitplayer. Two guns are better than one and having the ability to “match make” in Game Center or join up with a friend is an invaluable tool in a game like this.
While 2013: Infected Wars is not quite ready for release, what I have had the pleasure of playing so far tells me this is a game that every shooter/survival fan is going to want to take with them everywhere. Everyone should keep their eyes on Action Mobile Games’ Facebook page or Twitter for the game’s release and I look forward to trying my hand at the final product.
