3D Gaming is Dead… and You Helped Kill It

Sony Computer Entertainment’s UK boss Fergal Gara recently spoke to Eurogamer.net regarding the lack of interest the industry has seen in 3D gaming. Consumers decide how relevant it is. It’s fair to say consumers have decided it’s not hugely important at this time. It’s a capability we’ve got. It may have a bigger life a little further down the line. It’s great we can do it. It doesn’t seem to be the most powerful USP at the moment, so you’ve seen us shift our effort onto fresh new exciting IP.” Gara commented when asked why Sony seemed to be making less of a push for three dimensional gaming this year.

Gara went on to say that “Whether you look at movies or games, wearing the glasses and consuming 3D in that way in the home isn’t hugely popular. That’s just a fact.” Boy did he hit the nail on the head! For many people the hassle of wearing and purchasing the infamous 3D glasses is understandably more trouble than it’s worth. For those that require glasses to correct their vision, it becomes bulky. Using your top of the line Gunnars is kind of silly when wearing tinted 3D glasses over them. Not too mention the cost and the inevitable awkward moment when you have 3 people who want to play a game and only have 2 pairs of glasses!

Are you surprised that 3D gaming isn’t all the rage? In theory being laid out in the trenches of your favorite shooter sounds like a good time. Seeing the bullets fly past your face in real time, moving in your seat as debris falls down from above. Who doesn’t want to be driving a racecar while they are whipping their sweet modded ride through the city streets? You could burn rubber as you evade local law enforcement, going so fast that the scenery blurs just like it would if you were driving that reckless in the real world.

But for one reason or another, no one seems to care about how awesome 3D gaming could be. Is it that people are shying away from gaming being too realistic? Or are the glasses enough of a nuisance that consumers can’t be bothered? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
