3DS Surpasses PS3 Sales in Japan
Posted on December 14, 2012 AT 11:39am
Nintendo has always been known for its popular handhelds ever since the fan-favorite Game Boy days of the 90s. The original DS was its most popular handheld to date with a game library that puts other consoles to shame. However many were skeptical of Nintendo’s latest handheld, the 3DS, which didn’t show a lot of promise at first, especially in Nintendo’s home market of Japan. It seems these speculations were all for naught, because the system recently sold 211,000 units last week in Japan, putting its lifetime sales at 8.8 million after just over 2 years, surpassing the 6-year-old Playstation 3 lifetime sales by over 100,000. Note that these number are for Japan sales, and do not apply to international numbers.
For comparison, the Wii sales stand at 12.6 million, Wii U sold 308, 142 during Japan’s launch week, PSP sales are at 19.5 million, DS has sold 32.9 million and the poor Vita just passed the 1 million mark last week. (Source: MCVUK)
