A mix between Diablo and Trine is the first thing that comes to mind when I take a look at this new Action-RPG, Realms of Ancient War. Coming out on PC, Playstation Network, and Xbox Live; Wizarbox has quite the standard to live up to in this genre but so far their title is looking pretty solid. You can play as either a melee focused Warrior, a spell-slinging Mage, or an archery focused Rogue in a Tolkien-esque world.
The problem with most games of this genre is the monotony of the class you play. No matter how much effort you put in to making the class fun to play, players will get bored unless you make each spell incredibly engaging and fun to use time and time again. Diablo 3 managed to do this quite well but that comes with the territory of pretty much setting the standard for the genre. Wizarbox has instead offered a creative way to break up the standard playstyle of your character with their “Incarnation” ability, a way to take over larger monsters. It’s actually a pretty nice idea. Get bored of playing your mage? Hop into the giant statue of a medieval knight and wreck your enemies with its giant two-handed stone sword. Tired of shooting arrows at the undead? Take control of an Ent and live out your Lord of the Rings fantasies.
Realms of Ancient War may not stand above and beyond its predecessors from the looks of it, but at the same time it has a few interesting mechanics to make it its own. I’ll keep an eye on this new Hack’n’Slash adventure and probably give it a shot when it comes out this September.
