PAX Prime 2012 – Assassin’ Creed III Panel

By

One of the most packed panels of both awesome and audience size was Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III Panel in the Paramount theater. The panel started out with a bang, with the Ubisoft team showing a great trailer of the new Naval combat that will be introduced in AC III [Link below].

The audience was blown away (pun intended.) After the trailer, the speaker at the panel told us that we would see a never before seen video of some amazing real life AC parkour moves [Link now available below]. After some great moves, Ubisoft took it one step further and had the parkour video performer do some sweet moves on the stage, it was astounding!

After the cheers calmed down, the speaker started the questions and answering section with AC III’s Lead Game Designer and AC III’s Level Designer to talk about everything Assassin’s Creed. They spoke of some of the challenges that they have faced from the previous game, Assassin’s Creed Revelations. They also spoke about how the original engine that the AC games are built from was not well suited for large open areas like the open fields and forests of the 13 colonies. But both sounded super excited and pleased when answering the question, ‘What’s something that couldn’t be achieved then was?” with “Free running in trees,” describing that Connor, (the hero of AC III) can run in the tree tops fluidly with great animation and that all of his foot and hand placement is dynamic.

They also went over the insanely large risk that was the Naval combat feature, but the entire Ubisoft staff felt that the events of the American Revolution were drastically changed by the battles in the water and they wanted to be as historically accurate as possible. This meant that the Naval battles were a must in terms of telling the story of how America began. The speakers also want to make it perfectly clear that this game isn’t a glorified statement of “America is SO awesome and cool,” but simply that the American Revolution was a key moment in history for the whole world and that Connor takes part in it, but doesn’t choose sides.

I don’t know about you, but I’m super stoked for this game to come out!
