Before I go and give you all the details I’ll say this first: There is going to be an Assassin’s Creed film. Now for the specs that I’m sure you’re dying to know!

Ubisoft announced in a press release that Ubisoft Motion Pictures be collaborating with New Regency to bring the fan favorite franchise to life on the big screen. The screenplay is being worked on currently and per the press release is being “fast tracked as the creative pieces come together”.

“Ubisoft chose to partner with New Regency because they are a talent- and filmmaker-driven company, with the same independent and creative mindset that we have at Ubisoft Motion Pictures,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Bringing aboard New Regency’s renowned production and distribution expertise while maintaining our own creative and financial flexibility ensures that Assassin’s Creed will be a high-quality film that respects the lore and fans of the video game franchise.”

At this time it appears the only actor we know to be involved with the title is Michael Fassbender (who?), you can check out his IMDB page here (thought I would save you the trouble). Once you look at him you’ll very likely have an ‘ah-ha’ moment. No word yet on what role Fassbender will play in the project, but I’m sure wheels are already turning and fans already have their suspicions. The big question now is whether or not an Assassin’s Creed movie will be any good. The unfortunate reality is that video game adaptations are historically unpredictable as far as fan acceptance goes. Some fans will squee that it’s the greatest movie of all time, while others will send hate mail to the director’s house condemning them for ruining their favorite characters. Thankfully, Ubisoft will have a lot of creative control over the project so hopefully we will get the same level of quality that fans have come to expect from the franchise.
