BioWare Releases Mass Effect 3 Completion Numbers; Less Than Mass Effect 2 So Far

The Mass Effect games got to me, I’ll admit it. I’m not the type of person who gets overly excited about much anymore, including game launches, but Mass Effect 3 was different. Mass Effect 3 was probably the only game in 2012 that I’ll go out of my way to pre-order and eagerly await the arrival of — and that isn’t because the other games aren’t as good — but just that Mass Effect games were that good. We all know that sometimes getting to that finish line in games is kind of a pain sometimes. It’s okay, though, as it isn’t just games, but books as well. I’ve had a copy of Thomas Pynchon’s Against the Day on my nightstand since it was released in November, 2006, and might never finish it, sadly.

News came out from BioWare’s Fernando Melo today at a talk at GDC Europe that apparently fewer gamers have completed Mass Effect 3 than the previous title, Mass Effect 2. The numbers released were not surprising, but rather interesting to see. According to Melo, since the release of the final chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy, the game has been completed by 42% of players. That number is down from Mass Effect 2’s 56%, although it should be noted that those numbers could be skewed by the uptick in completions they saw leading into the third Mass Effect’s release.

These numbers, though, should not be taken as a measurement of quality or satisfaction, as completion rates in games are usually not stellar. Compare to other BioWare titles and these numbers are actually good; as the first Mass Effect has a 40% completion rate, Dragon Age Origins saw a 36% completion rate and Dragon Age 2 had 41%. The release of the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut was an attempt to assuage gamers who were possibly dissuaded from finishing the game due to the press about the ending that left some very vocal players unhappy and boost the completion numbers. If it worked or if it matters are different questions entirely.

The question now, for you, is; have you finished Mass Effect 3? If not, do you plan to or have you simply shelved it for the time being?
