So a while back announcements were made by Canadian rap battle league ,King of The Dot, that top-tier battle rapper Dizaster was to battle well known battle rapper Canibus, known for his battles, underground music and his beef with LL Cool J in 1997. In late May, KOTD released a trailer promoting the battle much like a championship title fight. For those unfamiliar with the concept of battle rap, think of it as UFC with lyrics/wordplay. Interestingly enough the battle, set for June 9th, was to be the same night Manny Pacquiao would fight against Timothy Bradley and lose his title in the process. Unfortunately for many, including him, Canibus would also lose that night in a fashion that would come across as absolutely mind boggling.
“You better come with some f****n’ bars. I don’t wanna hear no f****n’ excuses when the sh**’s fuckin’ over. This is your chance to f****n’ prove yourself, home. That’s the great thing about hip-hop… that if you get blackballed that if any stupid s*** happens to you in hip-hop no matter what somebody says to you. At the end of the day the power of the word is what remains so you can save yourself…” – Dizaster
When the time came to save himself, Canibus would throw the battle in an awkward way by not only choking/pausing through his first two rounds, but after a point in the battle he stopped and talked about how he prepared for 3 weeks. He then admitted to everyone that he messed up and was not a good freestyle rapper. Afterwards he pulled out a notepad that was claimed to have “30 pages of rhymes” to give the people some bars. If this was a last minute situation it might be understandable, though, still frowned upon. The problem is that Canibus had a few months to prepare for this battle and these battle leagues mostly have people who write their verses for battles. It all culminated into a huge disappointment for fans of battle rap, a disappointment for fans of Canibus and an overall awkwardly painful event to watch. I myself had to turn away because of all the cringing I was doing. After he recited his verse, Dizaster essentially went in for the kill with an absolutely harsh 3rd round.
This huge upset has got a lot of people scratching their heads in confusion as to how something could end this badly. Already people have taken to youtube en masse and have drawn one conclusion: Canibus’ career might very well be completely over and done with signaled by a collective facepalm from the Hip-Hop community. Still at the end of it, both contestants handled the matter respectfully. With Canibus paying respects to Disaster by “passing the torch” and Diz at least acknowledging that at one point he admired the skills that Canibus had.
