Captain Marvel #1 [Marvel Comics] Review

By

Throughout the course of Marvel Comics history, there have been seven heroes who have used the Captain Marvel mantle. Of the seven, none, aside from maybe the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, have had the kind of recognition that Carol Danvers has. Formerly Ms. Marvel, Carol has been one of the premiere superheroes in the Marvel Universe, leading the Avengers on several dangerous missions and helping to save the entirety of the universe on multiple occasions. Now taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel, Carol has her work cut out for her, with a new costume and hairstyle to reflect the major change.

Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick does a great job with the first issue, introducing Carol as a familiar character while still making this something of an origin story. While having already made some major changes to her appearance, Carol, still reluctant to take on the name of Captain Marvel, joins forces with Captain America to fight the Absorbing Man. The internal struggle continues throughout the issue as Carol thinks about the advice given by Cap, her good buddy Spider-Man, and the memories of one of her heroes, pilot Helen Cobb.

There is very little to disagree with in this issue, as artist Dexter Soy does a terrific job taking the art style in a new direction for a new book. A blended, oil paint-style gives the book a whole different feel to many of the other comic books on the market, setting the new Captain Marvel apart from not only from her Ms. Marvel persona, but from many other heroes as well. Some of the lettering at the end of the issue was interesting, as well.

Despite being incredibly solid, a bit more set-up, both past and present, would have been appreciated. Carol gives no reasoning for the major changes in her appearance. There was also no set-up for the next issue, which makes this feel more like a #0 than a #1, but these flaws are easily overshadowed by how great a start this book is getting. Carol Danvers is back and better than ever, now as Captain Marvel, and its going to be a fun ride.

The Good: Great Artwork, Good Character Introduction

The Bad: No Set-Up For Upcoming Issues

The Ugly: N/A

Score: 9.0

Russ Pirozek, known as "Noobcrawler" to some, is a gamer and comic book fan who sometimes gets around to writing for DigitalNoob.com. He's also awesome. If someone looked up "awesome" in the dictionary, his picture wouldn't be there, but that's because he's too busy being awesome to pose for a photo.
