Comic Countdown #25: Without Great Power

Posted on June 24, 2012 AT 08:21pm

It’s time for this week’s Comic Countdown, the weekly column where topics are discussed in list form. This week is going to cover those heroes who are just normal people, with no superpowers. These normal men and women are full of bravery and (usually) gadgetry, but possess no abilities outside the norm. With that, let’s get on with the countdown!

#10: The Green Hornet (Dynamite Entertainment)

While Britt Reed may not have any powers, he’s a damn good hero. Along with his sidekick Kato, Britt fights villains under the superhero name The Green Hornet. Using only his wits and his riches (which help him build some pretty incredible technology), The Green Hornet is a legendary character who doesn’t need powers to get the job done.

#9: Rorschach (DC Comics)

Rorschach has no abilities, unless homicidal schizophrenia is considered a superpower.  Under his ever-changing mask, Rorschach goes out and gets vigilante justice against anyone who deserves it, no matter what the cost of the punishment. His methods may not be pure, but the results can’t be argued with. He and his fellow Watchmen are vigilantes with no superhuman abilities (save for Doctor Manhattan), and Rorschach was the most interesting of all due to his attitude and ability to get things done.

#8: Hawkeye (Marvel Comics)

Clint Barton is an Avenger, a leader, and a expert marksman. He is a true hero in the Marvel Universe, even without the superhuman abilities most of his peers possess. Using his arsenal of arrows and his trusty bow, Hawkeye can take out anything, using his incredible skills to compensate for not having any special abilities.

#7: Kick -Ass (Icon/Marvel Comics)

Published under Marvel’s Icon Imprint, Kick-Ass tells the tale of a young man who decided to be a superhero. This doesn’t go well for quite awhile, but eventually, through luck and some help, he gets the job done. He has no powers, no skills, and no idea what he’s doing, but it’s a great series that has gained a lot of popularity lately, and for good reason.

#6: Batwoman (DC Comics)

Kate Kane is all the things Batman is, and several things he could never bring himself to do. She’s a former soldier, a vigilante, and one of the many who wear a version of the symbol he made famous. She’s not afraid to get a bit bloody, and do what it takes to get the job done. She may not have Batman’s gadgets, but she has her own system of martial arts, her own moral code, and without the technology at her disposal, kicks a lot more ass than Bruce Wayne does. She may not have the star power, but she could match wits with the bat any day.

#5: Bullseye (Marvel Comics)

Bullseye is a homicidal maniac who kill anyone if the situation calls for it (and a lot of times when it doesn’t). But this is one Marvel villain who has no powers, just an incredibly honed skill to be able to use any object as a weapon and to use it with deadly accuracy. He can hold his own with Deadpool, Taskmaster, Daredevil, and many others, despite not having any superpowers. He just hits his mark, every time.

#4: The Black Widow (Marvel Comics)

Natasha Romanova is a super spy, a highly trained, incredibly skilled undercover agent, who is a master in self-defense, interrogation, and manipulation. These skills came not naturally, but with training, practice, and determination. Using her potential skills as a launching pad, Romanova became the Black Widow, a S.H.I.E.L.D spy, a secret agent, and an Avenger. Despite not having powers, she can hold her own against any foe.

#3: The Joker (DC Comics)

Many of Batman’s foes carry no superhuman abilities, and his greatest enemy is no exception. He’s a skilled chemist, a highly-intelligent mastermind of crime, and a complete psychopath who will kill anyone and do anything. Despite consistent defeat by Batman, the Joker knows what he’s doing, constantly pushing Batman to the brink, knowing that even if he’s stopped, Batman will never kill him, allowing him to escape prison and wreak havoc once again. Easily the most important villain to never have a superpower, the Joker is one of a kind.

#2: The Punisher (Marvel Comics)

Frank Castle is a vigilante, an anti-hero, and a murderer. To be fair, they kind of had it coming. Despite having no superpowers, Frank makes due. With guns. Lots and lots of guns. Taking out anyone who deserves it, Frank Castle, under his alias The Punisher, takes the law into his own hands, no matter the cost to himself.

#1: Batman (DC Comics)

This was a no-brainer. Bruce Wayne is the highly-skilled, incredibly wealthy, masterfully intelligent vigilante known as the Batman. He has no powers, but his skills in martial arts, a plethora of gadgets, and a quick wit have allowed him to stop even the most deadly foes throughout Gotham City. From the Joker to Bane, Batman always finds a way to come out ahead, and his immense popularity easily makes him one of the top heroes in comics, and the clear choice for top hero without superpowers.

That’s it for the countdown this week! If there are any questions, comments, of disagreements, feel free to leave a comment below. Be back next week!

Russ Pirozek, known as "Noobcrawler" to some, is a gamer and comic book fan who sometimes gets around to writing for DigitalNoob.com. He's also awesome. If someone looked up "awesome" in the dictionary, his picture wouldn't be there, but that's because he's too busy being awesome to pose for a photo.
