It’s that time again! This week’s Comic Countdown is here, with more comic book topics in list form. This week will focus on the Justice League movie, as it’s been a major topic in the comic book world as of late. With the success of The Avengers, fans from the other side of the Big Two have been clamoring more and more for a film adaptation of their superteam. The movie is tentatively slated for a 2015 release, right around the time Avengers 2 is scheduled to release, and that means a lot of speculation until a cast is announced. So, with that, on to speculation, with ten potential actors for ten character who could appear in a Justice League Of America film.
#10: Martian Manhunter (Dennis Haysbert)
The Mean Green Martian whose not been the greatest hero lately is still a big part of Justice League lore, and Dennis Haysbert, who is better known as the All-State guy, is a very underrated actor who could pull off the look and personality of J’onn J’onzz without an issue. With the massive cast of the JLA and the turn Martian Manhunter has taken in the New 52 series, he may not be featured, but if he is, this could be one of the better picks for the cast.
#9: Cyborg (Donald Glover)
After an unsuccessful attempt to become the new Spider-Man, the multifaceted Glover has proven he can do just about whatever he wants. Usually featured more in comedic roles, this would be a major departure for him, but his connection with the culture and talent could make it work. Glover is a very underrated actor whose presence in a major film could be a huge push for an actor who already has a major following.
#8: Green Arrow (Stephen Amell)
Taking on the character of Oliver Queen in the new television show Arrow, Amell does a great job bringing depth to the character. Using his experience as the character to his advantage, and perhaps tying the show into the film, Queen could become a major character in the film if given the right push.
#7: Darkseid (Michael Clarke Duncan)
He’s been known for his role as the villain in Sin City, and he could easily do so again as the penultimate Justice League villain. As one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, with Duncan as one of the more popular actors in modern film, this could be a perfect match.
#6: The Green Lantern (Idris Elba)
A comic book superfan and terrific actor in comic book films previously, Elba would be perfect to take on the role of one of the Green Lanterns. He’s got all the tools: A terrific acting prowess, an enthusiasm for the source material, and the persona and look for John Stewart. He’s also got one of the more important tools just by not being Ryan Reynolds in the awful Green Lantern of 2011.
#5: The Flash (Bradley Cooper)
He’s in a lot of movies, and he may not be the perfect fit for Barry Allen, but he would do a good job, and is a good actor. The Flash has a comedic tone at times, and Cooper could pull that off with no problems, and having the personality is half the job of a good superhero representation. Being the fastest man alive comes with a lot of responsibility, however, and that is something that Cooper could hopefully live up to.
#4: Aquaman (Alexander Skarsgard)
Despite thoughts to the contrary, Aquaman isn’t exactly as useless as people suspect. He’s gone through quite a bit, and having a person who looks the part without a major aesthetic change would be helpful. Skarsgard also has the acting chops to make it work, and hopefully set him apart from the awful stereotypes the character has gotten in the past.
#3: Wonder Woman (Gina Carano)
Carano is everything that people would expect in Princess Diana: She’s smart, tough, and beautiful. Her previous work speaks for itself on all three counts, and her acting prowess, while not the most experienced, makes her a perfect fit to don the mantle of Wonder Woman. Her toughness and charisma would help her deliver a powerful performance for a character that has humble (and sexist) beginnings, and make her the dominant force she should be in a film such as this.
#2: Superman (Henry Cavill)
This is by far the easiest of the group because this actor has already been cast as the Man Of Steel, and so far looks to be the right fit for the part. As the leader of the Justice League, it’s up to Superman to make sure this team fits well, given everything they encounter. Cavill should do a fine job here, and there’s no reason to keep him from maintaining the role.
#1: Batman (Joesph Gordon-Levitt)
While Christian Bale was a terrific Batman, he’s decided to leave the franchise, so he’s out of the running. In that case, why not give it to a person who could potentially be rumored to take on the role? (Spoilers: If you haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises, now might be a good time) Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be an interesting choice, and he’d be the Batman for a new generation. Gone would be the deep, gravelly voice (hopefully), but a modern Batman, one who isn’t Bruce Wayne, but still has all the tools of the man who once donned the cape and cowl. Not a popular choice, likely, and probably not the one that will be made, but it’s a thought.
That’s it for this week, hope everyone enjoyed the rampant speculation and guesswork! Any comments or suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment. See everyone next week!
