Welcome to the thirty-fifth installment of the Comic Countdown, where comic book topics are put into some sort of numerical order. Despite previous comments, the Marvel NOW! initiative is beginning to look pretty interesting, with the secretive promotional images that Marvel has been going through making things almost like a game, with readers combining speculation with rumor and creative teams to try to get a handle on what titles Marvel is attempting to bring to the next phase of their campaign. This countdown will focus on ten of these promotional images, with an emphasis on the November releases and beyond, which will start the later waves of Marvel NOW!, after the initial launch in October.
#10: Killers (The Punisher)
With the Punisher’s mini-series wrapping up, he’s been rumored for a couple of new titles, including a team book. While that’s not exactly his style, Frank Castle is also rumored to have his own solo title coming out for Marvel NOW! and while not officially announced, the “Killers” promo image seems to be fitting for a Punisher title. With Sam Humphries and Ron Garney on board for the book, it looks like Frank will be in good hands to start doing the dirty work he does best.
#9: Lightning (Thunderbolts)
Another not-quite-announced title, the “Lightning” teaser seems to point to the Thunderbolts, and their war cry “Justice, Like Lightning”. With Daniel Way fresh off of his run on Deadpool, he seems primed to start work on a team title, and the rumor is that fan-favorite Cable will be joining in a leadership role. Joining Way will be Steve Dillon, and if this ends up being the title that the team is working on, this will be a book to watch out for.
#8: Extended (FF)
One of two new titles for comic’s first family to be written by Matt Fraction with art by Mike Allred, FF is one of the most well known titles in recent memory for the heroes. While its uncertain what differences it will have from the other series, it’s likely to focus more on the now-established Future Foundation, and not as much on the family itself. Fans of the four will have to be on the lookout for this title.
#7: Indestructible (Indestructible Hulk)
The newest Hulk book has been announced, with the teaser line “Indestructible”. With the creative team of Mark Waid and Leinil Yu on the project, this book is sure to bring Big Green to a whole new level after the newest run of the book ends just before the November launch of this title.
#6: Legacy (X-Men Legacy)
With several major X-Men titles on the way (what else is new?), one of the latest Marvel NOW! teasers has the launch of a new X-Men: Legacy title on the way. With several members on other titles, it will be interesting to see how many of the core members of past incarnations of the X-Men will appear or star in the book. Little is known about any of these titles, but the art team of Si Spurrier and Tan Eng Huat should be able to get this book rolling very well.
#5: Chimichanga (Deadpool)
In one of the most accurate teaser images for the Marvel NOW! campaign, Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan take on the Merc With A Mouth, along with Tony Moore. Daniel Way announced he was ending his run of the character, and things seemed to be lined up perfectly for this title to take over. With a comedian sharing writing duties on a book like this, its sure to be as ridiculous as ever.
#4:Family (Fantastic Four)
The other Matt Fraction title makes an appearance here, with the launch of the new Fantastic Four title, this time with Mark Bagley joining the crew. This new title will likely mean that there is more a focus on the family themselves and their heroic deeds than the FF counterpart, but that is yet to be known. Either way, Fraction looks like he’ll be handling the team for a long while, and they’re in good hands.
#3: Worthy (Thor: God Of Thunder)
Thor gets his new title coming in the near future with the new title Thor: God Of Thunder, written Jason Aaron, with art by Esad Ribic. Bringing the Asgardian to the fray in a new title, along with his work in the new Avengers titles will keep fans sated for a long time, and with a great team, this is definitely a title that should be on top as far as popularity is concerned.
#2: Invincible (The Invincible Iron Man)
What Marvel campaign would be complete without a new title for Tony Stark? With the new Invincible Iron Man title on the way from Keiron Gillen and Greg Land, it’ll be interesting to see how they take the major twists and turns in Stark’s life and bring it into a whole new universe, with new stories and new foes. Not to mention his appearances in some of the other new titles along with his other Avengers allies.
#1: Solider (Captain America)
Cap making an appearance on the top of the list should be no surprise, and his new title is definitely one that is one of the most eagerly anticipated. Cap will be returning, and along with Stark and Thor, in several different titles, in his own solo adventures, as well as in his normal role as leader of the Avengers. Rick Remeder and John Romita Jr. will be taking on the solo title, giving Steve Rogers a new breath of life after his current run comes to an end.
That’s it for this week! While more information is surely on the way, the new Marvel NOW! titles are beginning to take shape, and look like a pretty decent line-up. Those who have any thoughts, questions or comments, be sure to leave a message below. Until next week!
