Welcome to the newest installment of the Comic Countdown! After last week’s discussion about the best superhero/supervillain dynamics and the recent plot turn of Dan Slott’s Superior Spider-Man (Without any spoilers, some major villainous nonsense goes down between him and Doc Ock), a thought cropped up: what if some of the biggest adversaries had the opportunity to become their greatest foes? Whether it be to don their costumes or find a way to take over their bodies, if the villains who have been thwarted so many times by their righteous counterparts had the chance to become those very beings, what kind of havoc could they wreak on the world?
#10: Aquaman/Black Manta (DC Comics)
Aquaman’s greatest foe always had it out for the King of the Seas for one simple reason: The man who became the Black Manta had an affinity for the water, and while he was unable to get it, he vowed to destroy Aquaman because of his resonance with the water. If the Manta were able to become Aquaman instead of vowing to destroy him, perhaps he wouldn’t be so destructive. Or, given the ability to do what Aquaman does, would he take over the ocean, and then the world?
#9: Ms. Marvel/Moonstone (Marvel Comics)
While they didn’t have a major feud for the ages, Karla Sofen did take the mantle of Ms. Marvel during the Dark Reign story arc. While that was only a cosmetic identity theft, the incredible powers that Carol Davers held as Ms. Marvel (and especially now, with her new role as Captain Marvel) could make Moonstone a force to be reckoned with.
#8: Charles Xavier/Magneto (Marvel Comics)
These two men are two sides of the same coin. This would be an interesting but almost unnecessary swap, especially considering that the two of them were basically transformed into the same being during the Onslaught saga. Magneto’s ability to use the telepathic abilities of Charles Xavier could really move the chains on his overall goal of placing mutant kind on the top of the food chain. The X-Men might also be less of a concern with these abilities, given that he could telepathically nudge most of them into believing his ruse.
#7: Emma Frost/Selene (Marvel Comics)
The White Queen and the Black Queen were rivals for quite some time back in some of the earlier days of the X-Men. Selene’s abilities are formidable on their own, but the X-Men and Frost have always been there to stop her and the Hellfire Club. If Selene was able to somehow take on the appearance and abilities of the Diamond Lady herself, imagine the diabolical plots that she could enact, especially with the resources of Emma’s former group, the Hellfire Club.
#6: Mystique/Rogue (Marvel Comics)
This would be an especially interesting swap because of not only their respective abilities (Mystique’s ability to replicate shape and Rogue’s ability to absorb the powers and memories of other mutants) but because of the familial bond they once shared. Rogue and Raven Darkholme at one point had a mother/daughter relationship, which has since become estranged due to the whole hero/villain dichotomy. With Raven’s experience becoming other people and the extreme power of Rogue’s mutant ability, this could become very dangerous, especially when added to Raven’s evil tendencies.
#5: Captain America/Baron Zemo (Marvel Comics)
Zemo is one hell of a villain, whose abilities and penchant for not dying have made him a thorn in Captain America’s side for some time. While the technology in his headband gives him some major superhuman abilities, using his superior intellect to find a way to become his greatest foe could really turn the tide in his diabolical plans. Given the guise of the Captain along with his Super Soldier enhancements, Zemo could bring chaos to the world and bring his plans for a Master Race to fruition.
#4: Wonder Woman/Cheetah (DC Comics)
Wonder Woman has many foes, and Cheetah is one of her arch-rivals. Using her augmented speed, strength and agility against Princess Diana in efforts to kill her has been the main motive for the villain over the course of many years. If ever given the opportunity to become Wonder Woman, Cheetah may be able to not only destroy the legacy of Wonder Woman, but to find a way to destroy Diana herself. This would be an interesting trade-off for the two, though given her cunning, Wonder Woman may still find a way to stop her nemesis.
#3: Superman/Lex Luthor (DC Comics)
Luthor is one of the few foes that doesn’t have any superpowers to give the Man of Steel a run for his money. Given that, if somehow Luthor was able to use his vast intellect to take over the body of Superman, the effects could be apocalyptic. The incredible abilities of Superman used for evil instead of good could easily destroy the world in record time. This would be an incredibly bad thing to happen, if Luthor was able to keep his own mind intact in the body of the Kryptonian hero.
#2: Batman/Bane (DC Comics)
The Caped Crusader has been beaten but gotten through it more times than anyone can count. The one foe whose beaten him further than anyone is Bane. Bane, the villain with enhanced but drug-induced strength and an incredible intellect has broken the Bat in more ways than one. If Bane was able to become the Bat, using his vast resources and knowledge he could take over Gotham in a heartbeat. Using the Titan formula to create a super-strong, incredibly cunning and gadget laden Batman could spell doom for Gotham, and the world, if Bane were ever to become the Batman.
#1: Reed Richards/Doctor Doom (Marvel Comics)
Doom has always had it out for Richards since the early days of the Fantastic Four, and becoming Mister Fantastic could be just what Doom needs to fulfill his evil deeds. Plus, he’d get a chance to get with Sue Storm, who he’s been after since before the cosmic accident that caused the creation of the Fantastic Four themselves. Given the elastic ability of Richards, combined with the intellect and cunning of Doom (also his mastery of robotics), Doom could finally fulfill his quest for world domination.
