Welcome to the latest installment of the Comic Countdown, where comic book topics are put into numerical form. Last week was the sequel to the very first Countdown, “X-Men: Working Class”, and this week will continue to talk about the Merry Mutants. With so many different groups in the X-Universe, it seems fitting to take a look at the many different incarnations of the superheroes. So let’s get ready for the countdown!
#10: New Mutants
This team of X-Men in training have grown into a group of their own with a great following and some terrific characters. With X-Veterans such as Magik and Cannonball once on the squad, and with fan favorites such as Cypher and Dani Moonstar holding down the fort, this team has their fair share of adventures and trials, and come out for the best. These mutants are the next wave of X-Men, and they’re proving to be able to handle the job.
This team of space and time traveling mutants are an interesting mix of characters that move through realities that have some issues with them. While characters die or are returned to their home realities quite a bit, this rotating cast of characters are all card carrying mutants, some of which X-Men themselves, and all of them are willing to sacrifice themselves to save the world, making them a great addition to this list.
#8: X-Treme X-Men
The current run of this series is quite interesting, with the Earth 616 reality Dazzler leading a team of heroes from different dimensions, including Wolverine, Cyclops and others. With this interesting assembly of heroes, this series is more gritty and full of more adventure than the normal series of mutant heroes, which easily places them on this list.
This team of heroes, mainly from the UK, has had a star-studded roster of crime fighters on their side. With Nightcrawler and Shadowcat on its side, Excalibur was one of the biggest off-shoots of the X-Men family. Though they are no longer in action, many long time fans of the X-Men know Excalibur, and love them just as much.
#6: Wolverine And The X-Men
In the aftermath of Schism, Wolverine took those willing to go with him and started his own school for young mutants. The Jean Grey School For Higher Learning has become a major asset to the X-Universe, even with the division that have been created by many of the classic members of the team.
#5: Age Of Apocalypse
This series, featuring many members of the alternate-reality X-Men (who have many members who are deceased in Earth 616, and vice versa), have a lot on their hands, with Apocalypse coming and being held in the body of a small child, who was killed, and then placed into the body of another man. This series looks to be ending soon, but thus far, with the names and faces that are gone in normal realities, this is a great series to check out.
#4: X-Men (New Team)
While this series has yet to actually be published, this team of all-female heroes is one that already looks as though it’s going to be a classic. With Storm, Rogue, Psylocke and others on the team, there looks to be no threat that could truly stop these heroic heroines. With the familiar faces that are also on the roster (the return of Jubilee amongst them), this should be a great series for the X-Men universe.
There have been many incarnations of this classic team, but throughout the years, one thing is certain: this team gets results. Formed by Cyclops to ensure mutants were protected by any means necessary, this team is full of renegade mutants who will stop at nothing to destroy those who wish to stop them.
#2: All-New X-Men
A series that has the best of both worlds (the classic original team and the newest and most popular members of the current history), this series is one of the greatest additions to the X-Men canon. The conflicts that come from time-travel have made for an entertaining series, and with the way the title is going and the faces that show up in the series, this title is an amazing addition to a star-studded franchise.
#1: Uncanny X-Men
Nothing beats the real thing. With one of the longest running series in history, the Uncanny X-Men title has created some of the most popular characters, some of the most impressive story-lines and some of the greatest issues in comics history. Some of the most important characters in the history of comic books were designed for this franchise, and with a line-up like that, nothing could possibly top the original run of the Merry Mutants.
That’s it for this week, be sure to check back in next week for more comic book topics, only from the Comic Countdown!
