Comic Countdown #61: Marvel SXSW Announcements

By
Posted on March 10, 2013 AT 06:36pm

Welcome to the latest installment of the Comic Countdown! Earlier today, Marvel made some major announcements at South By Southwest (SXSW). With major innovation, Marvel has skyrocketed into the top company in the comic book industry, using incredibly creative multimedia tools and employing some of the brightest creative talents in the industry. With the announcements made at SXSW, they look to be furthering the industry to exciting degrees. That being said, it’s time to take a look at several of the announcements and what it could mean for Marvel and the industry as a whole.

#10: Marvel’s Big Show

Marvel always makes a huge impact, and this year’s SXSW is no exception. With a huge amount of announcements on display, Marvel is taking teh comic book world by storm with their “ReEvolultion” tag, bringing new and revolutionary content to the forefront of the rapidly-expanding technological world.

#9:Epic Presentation

Marvel always seems to get the best of the best to help share their new ideas, and with partnerships from toy-makers to audio, video and content creators, Marvel is at the pinnacle of all things technology. Using their “House Of Ideas” label, Marvel has made major announcements in every way throughout the ages.

#8: They Broke The Internet

According to social media, Marvel’s SXSW announcement made a major impact, taking over the number one trending topic on Twitter and causing a major stir all over the internet. While this is obviously only a fleeting achievement, having this many people all over the world talking about the same thing all at once is a huge deal, especially given the fact that comic books have begun to go by the wayside in terms of popularity. The properties are hotter than ever, but with so much multimedia, the books themselves have slipped in popularity. This is a major success for the company and their new line of comic books as a whole.

#7: They Also Broke ComiXology

After their announcement of a brand new comic book initiative, Marvel Comics broke the digital comics app ComiXology, flooding their servers with traffic. Fans from all over flocked to the app to grab some major titles (the reason will be announced later in the countdown), and basically broke the entire Internet in several places.

#6: A Lot Of Comics

The freshly-announced Marvel Unlimited App should be a huge success for Marvel Comics, and for many reasons. While the previous version of the app was Flash-based, the new one will be far more accessible for everyone involved, starting with Apple’s iPad and iTunes apps. Offering discounts, exclusives and comics (obviously), this multi-faceted launch will bring readers into a new generation of comics for a long time to come. With this app, Marvel can and will deliver a ton of back content for fans to enjoy.

#5: Marvel Original Video

While Marvel has done some original video content in the past, the company is taking things to a whole new level with brand new original video content. Featuring behind the scenes looks at all things Marvel and hosted by TV personality Blair Butler, Marvel: Earth’s Mightiest Show will have news, documentaries and more. There are also some of the more off-kilter shows being produced, such as Marvel Superheroes: What The-?! and The Watcher, which have been done in the past but will have an added emphasis in the future.

#4: Project: Gamma

Marvel is really just going off script, now. Their newest announcement, Project: Gamma, an innovative new experience that adds voices and sounds to digital comics, creating an incredible audio and visual experience that comic book readers have never seen before.

#3: New Marvel Unlimited

It was mentioned earlier, but Marvel Unlimited is getting a bit of an overhaul. This free app also has access to a subscription service that allows for readers and fans to get the most out of their Marvel comics. Keeping track with all of your digital comics on the web is one thing, but with the ability to save up to six comics to view offline, Marvel is really taking off with the newest trend in comics presentation.

#2: A Near Infinite Supply Of Marvel Infinite

Using the mobile device as a tool to present new and creative stories, Marvel has announced that their popular Infinite Comics branch is launching weekly, starting July 9th. Four characters will be getting thirteen part stories, starting with Wolverine. With all of these titles, Marvel is pushing Infinite to new heights, making it a viable comic book medium for fans of all types, and a great tool for the modern age of comic book readers.

#1: Seriously, A Lot Free Comics

Marvel has gone off the deep end with the launch of free trial comics for fans to enjoy. With a huge amount of comics coming to digital shelves, Marvel has also announced that within that content there will be a large amount of #1′s, allowing for fans to see the beginning of many series, both young and old. Over seven hundred first issues will be available for readers to experience, and with that many to choose from, fans of every type should be happy with a brand new comic to read. Uncanny X-Men, Captain America and others will all be available through the Marvel Digital Comics app and on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited from today until March 12th.

Russ Pirozek, known as "Noobcrawler" to some, is a gamer and comic book fan who sometimes gets around to writing for DigitalNoob.com. He's also awesome. If someone looked up "awesome" in the dictionary, his picture wouldn't be there, but that's because he's too busy being awesome to pose for a photo.
