Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Comic Countdown! This week, ABC and Marvel announced that the highly anticipated television show Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. was picked up by ABC Television, bringing Marvel Studios into brand new area of entertainment. Starring Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and several other actors, this show will follow the agency through what will likely be many different espionage and super-powered missions throughout this expansive universe. With many different characters available to use as guest stars/supporting actors in the show, we here at the Countdown thought it would be fun to wildly speculate on who could be on the show in some capacity. Now it’s time for the Countdown!
#10: Doctor Strange
The former Sorcerer Supreme is linked to the upcoming Phase Three of the MCU, but Stephen Strange could do well if they attempt to test the waters of magical powers in a smaller medium. Bringing Strange into the fray could really add a new dimension to the show and to the MCU, giving fans a sneak peek at what the good Doctor could do when given a chance in live-action.
#9: Sharon Carter
A woman who is one of the most well-known agents in the organization, known for taking out one of the biggest names in comics, Captain America. Her prowess as an agent is unparallelled, and with her on board, it could open up doors for a lot of other characters. Plus, it could put her at odds with other agents and bring up a plethora of story ideas for the show, just with her presence alone.
Another character Marvel just got the rights back to, Matt Murdock could become the hotshot lawyer who helps with some of the more trying matters of being a secret agent. The fact that he moonlights as a superhero doesn’t hurt either, and with the lackluster Daredevil film still lingering in the minds of fans, bringing a fresh take to the character could rebuild his credibility, especially after some amazing comic book runs as of late.
#7: Jessica Drew
The famed double-double agent who is known by her code name Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew would be a terrific fit into this show. Drew has worked with some major organizations, becoming a spy for HYRDA, S.H.I.E.L.D. and others, using her powers to bring espionage to a new level. She’s a major character who has never really be used in any other the MCU, so bringing her in would make a lot of fans very happy.
Tony Masters, the hero/villain/something or other with his photographic memory would be a great addition as a threat to the organization. Bringing in this antagonist could provide a major force against these underdog agents, with highly trained villains wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting team and causing all sorts of problem.
#5: Abigail Brand
The S.W.O.R.D. leader is a character created by Whedon during one of his X-Men runs. Adding her could bring in a cosmic impact that could help introduce the element for films such as Guardians Of The Galaxy and the Avengers sequel. While it’s highly unlikely that Brand would be introduced into the show, adding her could open the galaxy to the MCU and to this television show.
#4: Iron Fist
Danny Rand has a history working with many different hero teams and aiding in several major missions not only on his own, but in his former team, Heroes For Hire. A master of the K’un L’un martial arts form and a member of the ancient Immortal Weapons, Rand would be a major addition to the show for any length of time. But of course, Rand is almost always thought of in tandem with the next person on the list…
#3: Luke Cage
It’s already been rumored that Cage will make an appearance in the show, possibly played by J. August Richards. Cage coming in brings the bullet-proof superhero element into the show, setting a precedent for powers to play a major role. While his appearance may not be anything but temporary, bringing him in long term opens the doors for a lot of different characters to appear on the show.
#2: Maria Hill
The MCU second-in-command would be a great overboss for the show, giving orders directly to Agent Coulson. Cobie Smulders already did a great job with the role in The Avengers, and with her past experience on television as Robin on How I Met Your Mother, she could work well in a small role, making appearances every now and then.
#1: Nick Fury
Who else would top this list? Director Fury would be a major coup for the show, bringing in a big name talent to the show. Samuel L. Jackson would be a huge draw for the show, and reprising his role as Fury would bring in some major credibility to the cast. Even if it’s just a few cameos here and there, having Fury in would be a massive victory for the continuation for the show.
That’s all for this week! Check back next week for more comic book content only on the Comic Countdown!
