Welcome to the Comic Countdown! Recently, there was an announcement that Marvel Studios has announced release dates for three new films: one releasing on May 6, 2016, July 8, 2016 and another on May 5, 2017. These announcements mean two more epic Marvel Comics adaptations coming in the next few years, and though there has been no announcement on what these films will be, that won’t stop everyone (including the Countdown) from wildly speculating about what they could be. Time to have some fun guessing in this week’s Comic Countdown!
#10: Black Widow/Hawkeye
These two have long been rumored to star in a film together, as their chemistry, both in comics and through the films (with Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner playing the roles), is undeniable. Hopefully the romantic aspect of their relationship is downplayed, but with Marvel Studios already releasing films for the four major Avengers on the big screen, it would be a mistake to not make at least one film featuring these characters in their own adventures.
#9: Black Panther
This one is actually a near lock to be made sometime in the future, but there is still no formal release date as to when the King of Wakanda will be making his feature film debut. This could be a great push for not only diversity in race but in culture as well, as Wakanda is a fictitious African country with incredibly rich mineral reserves of vibrainium, the most durable metal in the world. Making a Black Panther film would also help open up the globe for teams such as the Avengers, who have mostly stuck to outer space or to the United States.
#8: The Incredible Hulk
They’ve done this before, sure, but there hasn’t been a good Hulk movie since…well, ever. TheHulk film franchise has been pretty lackluster, and Marvel Studios still hasn’t made a film with the newest Bruce Banner, Mark Ruffalo. This opens the door for a brand new Hulk film, and with his starring role inThe Avengers, he deserves a film of his own.
Marvel Studios recently got the rights back to the hyper-sensed superhero Daredevil, and with that, a new film starring Matt Murdock is likely on the way in the near future (especially after the dismal Daredevil film released by Fox). Daredevil is a great hero and would be welcome to join the teams of New York based heroes in the Marvel Universe.
#6: Captain Marvel
With the popularity of one of the most well-known female superheroes in comics, making a Captain Marvel film would be huge. Carol Danvers is one of the best characters in the comic world, a leader and incredibly tough. Using her in a starring film could work as a prelude to a team film, or branching out from an ensemble. Having a prominent female hero in the Marvel Universe other than the non-powered Black Widow would be a great addition to the MCU, especially with all of the complicated situations that are already in the films.
#5: Doctor Strange
The Sorcerer Supreme is already rumored to be getting a film, so it’s no surprise that he’s on this list. Doctor Strange is a very popular character on the outskirts of the main Marvel casts, and placing him in a film will not only allow for his initiation into the Avengers, but also into some of the cosmic situations being placed into the MCU. His work on the Defenders in the comics already make him an obvious choice for cosmic situations.
#4: Thor 3
With the notion that a fourth Iron Man film is not likely, the push for Chris Hemsworth and the cast of the Thor franchise is likely. With the sequel due for release this year, there is a chance that this will be out quite a bit sooner than the 2016 or 2017 announcements, but if enough films get going, this franchise could be given a bit of a break and be pushed out a bit later.
#3: Guardians Of The Galaxy 2
The first of theGuardians films is set of release in 2014, and with a big push likely, this could be a major franchise in the next few years. It’s already been insinuated that there will be more of these cosmic team films, and with the popularity of nearly all MCU films, this could be a big player around that July 2017 release, if there is a long enough period between films.
#2: Captain America 3
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is already on its way (in 2014), and with that, a solo Cap film could be primed to be in one of those May release dates. Giving the “Avengers Big Three” each three solo films leading each phase of the MCU would be a good idea, allow each of them a trilogy to work through not only their own issues, but the issues of the Avengers as well. Having a third film for the Star-Spangled Avenger would be essential, since he is the leader of the team and likely of the Marvel Universe.
#1: The Avengers 3
This is likely going to be slated for a summer 2018 release, given the time frame between the original Avengers and the announced sequel, but the July 2017 release date could be a prime place to close out the trilogy for this team. With major characters in play, this could be one of the most anticipated films on the year of its release, whenever that may be.
That’s it for this week! Be sure to check back next week for more from the Comic Countdown!
