Welcome to Comic Countdown number eighty! With the big crossover event “Battle Of The Atom” on its way next month from Marvel Comics and superstar writer Brian Bendis, now looked like the time to take a look at some possible plot points for one of the biggest X-Men events ever. With that, it’s time for the countdown!
#10: More Time Travel!
This event will feature even more of the time-travel that made All-New X-Men such a polarizing thing when it was first announced (the end result being that it’s a terrific book). With the knowledge that not only will the present X-Men be in this event, and not only the original five who came back for their own title, but a group of future mutants will be pushed into the fray as well. In an event reminiscent of “Days Of Future Past” combined with All-New, this new event should bring the past, present and future together in a really interesting way.
#9: New Looks
Not only will the future version of the well-known members of the X-universe be looking a bit different, but it’s likely some of the current members will get some kind of makeover as well. With Storm returning to her 80′s mohawk look as a leading member of the team and the Cyclops sporting a new look, things will likely get interesting visually for several of the characters, especially seeing as they don’t seem to age at all.
#8: Character Interactions
With so many major characters coming into play, it’s likely that some characters who don’t get too much time together will get a bit more, and some interesting relationships may form because of it. A bond with a future version of the character could trickle into the past and vice versa, something that has already been seen to an extent in the pages of All-New X-Men.
#7: Alternate Future Characters
Not only will some get new looks, it seems that some featured characters might be completely different from a personality perspective, as well. With some continuity issues already sprouting, characters like Beast, who has already mutated twice may look different now, original team member Angel could have a new future based on his decision to join the Uncanny X-Men, and some other mutants not featured may have made some major decisions as well that could alter who they become.
#6: New Romances
The X-Men are known for taking some dives into the realm of the hook-up. From the long standing relationship of Scott and Jean to the very odd and short-lived whirlwind of Angel and Husk to many, many others, the X-Men are known to flock to one another. And with so many major characters in play here, it’s likely that passion will rear its head during this emotional event.
#5: New Characters
With so much going on in this ten part event, it’s likely that there will be at least one new character introduced in this series. There has already been some speculation on this character and even some very basic designs, so along with the X-verse mainstays, look out for some unfamiliar faces as well.
#4: Mutant Focus
Up until the latest two Bendis-written titles, there was a lot less mutant-focused issues than there used to be in the X-Men titles. Since this change, however, there has been a higher priority given to the merry mutants, and with this event, it’s all eyes on them. It’s the first time in awhile that mutant issues have been such a big part of an event, so this is good news fro X-fans.
It happens all the time in the X-Verse. During a major conflict, an argument or just during lunch, one of the X-Men decide to make their way to an opposing side. Whether it was Colossus joining Magneto, Rogue joining the X-Men after leaving the Brotherhood or Angel going from All-New to Uncanny, this is a common occurrence. With the stakes this high it’s likely to happen again, and at an inopportune moment, for sure.
#2: One Less Mutant
Another thing that happens a lot (though usually not for long) is someone on the team giving their life to the mutant cause. Jean Grey did it (a few times), Colossus gave it a go, and most recently, Professor Xavier was taken down by Phoenixclops. While most of them came back (the word is still out on Xavier), it’ll be unlikely to get through the event and not see someone fall, and not get back up (until the next event, at very least).
#1: Continuity Changes
This is already happening on a consistent basis since the original team came to the present, but with the future members coming back as well, there is no way that X-Men continuity is not going to be forever altered after this event. New people are making new decisions, which is affecting some of the most notable decisions in X-Men history, and this is almost guaranteed to happen again after the conclusion of this series. While it’s not been made known what’s going on, it’ll likely be something major (return of Xavier, anyone?).
That’s it for this week, be sure to check back next week for another Comic Countdown!
