Comic News: Dark Horse Teams Up With A Legend, Marvel And Image Announce New Titles And Cartoonists Go Meta With IDW
Posted on January 9, 2013 AT 05:18pm
Lots of great news coming out of the comic book world today, with several companies making major announcements. While Marvel Comics is making headlines with some of their new Marvel NOW! announcements, Image Comics is doing the same. Dark Horse Comics has a terrific collaboration forthcoming, and even IDW Publishing is getting in on the news day with a very interesting upcoming release. More after the end of this sentence!
Marvel Comics has been very busy lately, releasing a whole new brand of comics with the start of Marvel NOW! at the end of last year. So far, some great books have come out of that brand, and more are sure to follow, with two more cryptic announcements being made: Jason Aaron has been slated to release another title in what will likely be an illustrious career as the teaser “Birth” for an as-of-yet unnamed series was released. Teaming with Simone Bianchi, this will hopefully be a new team, character or both. Marvel also announced another teaser recently, with the mysterious title “XX” that sees the meteoric rise of the already famous Brian Wood taking the help for a Marvel book with Olivier Coipel. Both of these titles will have more news on them soon, so be sure to stick around.
Image Comics got in on things today as well, with the announcement of the new title Five Ghosts, which was debuted as an independent title at NYCC. Image grabbed it, and now the Frank J. Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham title will be released as a mini-series through Image coming this March. It focuses on Fabian Grey, a thief who is possessed by five ghosts that represent literary archetypes, each one giving Grey their skills. This looks like an interesting title to be on the lookout for.
Dark Horse Comics has announced a partnership with game creator American McGee in the form of his studio, Spicy Horse. Having recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for their new ARPG Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, the studio is now working with Dark Horse to make the series into a comic book as well. the series will be done by the team of Justin Aclin and Vasilis Lolos, and should be getting to shelves sometime this May as a three-issue mini.
Last but not least, IDW Publishing is taking a unique look into the world of cartoonists by releasing the new book Comics About Cartoonists: The World’s Oddest Profession. This will take a first-person look at the people who chose this difficult profession in the form of comic books in which the cartoonist in question actually appears. With names such as Will Eisner and Jack Kirby in the mix, this is going to be a terrific look into the world of cartooning. The book is in stores now, so be sure to check out a look at a creative world from the eyes of those who helped build it.
That’s all for today, be on the lookout for more comic book news as it arrives!
