DIVEKICK: A Fighting Game With Only … Two Buttons?
Posted on July 18, 2012 AT 04:43am
An acquaintance of mine posted about a highly unusual fighting game seeking Kickstarter funds the other day. The game in question is DIVEKICK, a two player fighting game, created by One True Game Studios. What’s so unusual about it, you ask? There’s no d-pad. There’s none of the high-middle-low or hard-medium-light attack buttons we’ve become so used to seeing. There are all of two–yes, two–input buttons: ‘Dive’ and ‘Kick’. And that’s all she wrote when it comes to character controls.
Don’t be fooled, though. I was, until I saw the game in action. The controls are deceptively simple, but it’s actually very deep. ‘Dive’ is your jump button, and ‘Kick’… well… it kicks. But if you’re not in the air, you move backward when you kick the ground. On top of that, a single hit ends any given round. There’s a lot more to it than that, and you can see all the details on their Kickstarter project page.
And now, some head-kicking action … intermingled with a healthy [?] dose of insanity!
I’ll be honest: I love me some fighting games, though I feel like the whole genre has become overly complex with the combos, breakers, special attacks, counters, counter breakers, counter breaker counters, and the list goes on. DIVEKICK looks like it’s refreshing change that the fighting genre really needs to get back on its feet… Assuming it doesn’t get a concussion from all boots to the head.
At this moment, they’re aiming for a $30,000 goal, and they’re over two-thirds of the way there. There’s two whole weeks to go as of today, so I definitely forsee this game getting the funds it needs to take over the world, two buttons at a time.
