Bethesda Softworks is one of the biggest companies in gaming, and at E3 this year, they had quite a bit to say about three major franchises in their stable. In a sit down preview of some of their upcoming titles, Bethesda was eager to show off not only their newest installment to the Wolfenstein franchise, but also some information about their massively popular MMO The Elder Scrolls Online and the upcoming survival horror title The Evil Within.
Wolfenstein: The New Order is another installment in the classic FPS franchise, this time taking place in an alternate timeline where the Nazi’s have won WWII, they have some major technology, and funny dialog is outlawed (allegedly). Taking on the classic hero of the franchise, fight through hordes of Nazi’s, robots and other craziness. The hands-on portion was a fun, violent romp through an alternate reality full of bad puns, bullets and blood. It’s the Wolfenstein of the new era, and makes no appearances to the contrary.
Elder Scrolls Online was mainly showing off some of the more improved portions of their game, which included the jump to next gen. With the long run franchise and the massively popular game also on consoles as well as PC, showing off the game to fans who may have forgotten about it was a great plan.
Then it was time for the big guns. Bethesda returns to the survival horror genre with The Evil Within, a game that looks as scary as it sounds. It’s Resident Evil without the terrible camera system, and this game looks legitimately horrifying, and provides much more atmospheric terror than the cheap “jump at you” scares that come with many horror games. From what was shown, this game is going to be a return to the true survival horror genre, and starting next year, the scares are coming back with a vengeance.
Thanks to Bethesda for allowing us to check out their new projects at this year’s E3!
