[E3 2013] Call Of Duty Ghosts Demo First Impressions

Tango Down!

This year at E3, I got the opportunity to see where the Call Of Duty franchise is heading with a Call Of Duty Ghosts demo held by Activision/Blizzard. I must say, I am happy to report that the franchise is better than ever and the sky is the limit.

Call Of Duty Ghosts will be using a brand new world, and story line. An event decimates the entire United States Military which puts them as the underdog in the warfare. That’s where the Ghosts come in. These highly trained military operatives stop at nothing to regain control using their weapons, and tactic by any means necessary.

The game engine in Ghosts is one that has never been seen before. A new technology rendering called displacement mapping is being used which uses a high resolution geometry. Rocks and shapes come to life even more with this displacement turned on. Without this feature, the sub-terrian appears flat. It made the landscape look a lot more realistic and believable.

Another part of the game engine called real time sub D will continue to help show incredible detail in terms of lighting and shadowing in the game. Vistas never looked so lifelike in a Call Of Duty game that I’ve ever seen.

But when you play COD, you’re not playing to look at the vista so lets get into the actual demo. In the first demonstration, the Ghosts are placed in a reconnoissance mission where the area is already in a heightened alert. As they infiltrate the area, the ghosts and their dog Riley initiate their tactical skills and utilize the dog by having it draw enemy attention and attacking from behind. In the play through the dog played an elite part of the squad as recon and there’s not a doubt in my mind that Riley will be utilized throughout the game on land based missions; a key element that gives the Ghosts the edge against the resistance.

The second portion of the demo showed the ghosts infiltrating in an underwater mission to take out an enemy resistance. As they moved underwater and came closer to the target, eventually destroying it, the Ghosts had to avoid multiple falling debris from the target underwater and avoid an all out retaliation assault from the enemy. In the least, it was extremely intense.

Call Of Duty Ghosts looks very promising and there’s no doubt that it will be on the top of everyone’s preorder list. I know it will be on mine after seeing the demo today.
