[E3 2013] inFAMOUS: Second Son Demo First Impressions

inFAMOUS: Second Son is all about taking back what was yours in the first place. Freedom.

Set about seven years following the events of inFamous 2 in the city of Seattle, the government has now put in place a rapid response force for keeping people with special powers at bay. The game follows the story of Delsin Rowe who wants to set the record straight and not conceal his powers from the public.

Delsin has the ability to drain other super human abilities that he will encounter throughout the game. And in classic inFamous fashion, your decisions will dictate how your powers evolve as you play the game whether your deeds are for the greater good, or the faces of evil along with the storyline and character development.

The game itself looks very smooth and fluid. Second Son did run with a hiccup as the alpha build of the game did crash in the beginning but once restarted, it worked just fine on the PlayStation 4 dev. kit. This isn’t out of the ordinary as alpha to pre alpha code is subject to some hiccups and does not reflect what the final build of the game will do.Smooth graphics, vibrant colors shown off in this game give just a small sampling of what the PlayStation 4 is actually capable of producing. The game looked superb.

Brian Fleming, one of the founders of Sucker Punch hosted the closed door demonstration of the game. I had the opportunity to ask him what it was like to develop on the PlayStation 4, and what differences there were in comparison to the PlayStation 3.

The biggest challenges for us is literally keeping our team size under control. When you’re trying to create so much interaction and detail, team size is the biggest risk. So for us we worked really hard for the first year of development on the tools that the artists use so that we can kind of keep our head count under control.

From a programming standpoint, I would say the programmers believe it’s been a terrific experience. We worked with the people who make a lot of the core engineering decisions because they’re the ‘open world’ guys in the Sony family so it was really cool to work with them. We’ve only been owned by Sony for about a year and a half so it’s been a nice experience to be able to work on a launch console.

inFamous: Second Son will be available Q1 of 2014 for the PlayStation 4 console.
