E3 Hands-On Preview: Star Trek

Posted on June 5, 2012 AT 09:47pm

The upcoming Star Trek game is a go-between for the first and second films, which were recently re-launched. The game will take place between the first and second movies, and will include all of the voice cast from the film, as well as those actors working as character models. At this year’s E3, there was a live demonstration of the new game, a reveal for a new enemy type, as well as the direction of the game.

The first thing that was taken away from the demo was that it was in 3D. This seemed completely unnecessary. The game didn’t benefit from a 3D demo at all, and hopefully that was just for show, and not part of the eventual release. The entirety of the demo showed co-op play between Spock and Kirk on New Vulcan, the Vulcan settlement that was established after the end of the first film. The voice acting was about as decent as the movie (which is mixed, to say the least), but seems a bit too forced, with the banter between Spock and Kirk falling flat.

The game play didn’t fare much better. For being in 3D, the graphics looked outdated, with animations that were clunky and awkward. The firing system was about a generic as most games that feature shooting, with the only possible cool exception being the co-op teamwork system. While this was a plus, other games have done it better, and this game seems like just another mediocre movie tie-in.

Hopefully, as the rest of the development progress the game will pick up a bit, and it won’t be as disappointing as the E3 demo. Keep an eye out for more information on the game, which releases sometime next year for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.
