Japan releases some very strange games, and this is no exception. Created by Japanese developer Xtal Sword and published in the United States by Nyu Media, this game follows Eryi, a young fairy who just wants to have a snack. Unfortunately, a troll named Farta decides it’s better off in his hands and steals it, forcing Eryi to go and get it back. This simple premise is incredibly misleading, given how the rest of the game turns out.
The graphics are wonderful for the style of the game. Crisp, smooth and detailed, everything flows very well and looks very pretty in a cartoon-like way, making it a very fun and vibrant looking game. The several varied levels all look great, keeping the same style throughout while changing locations through various settings. While backgrounds are simple, this type of game calls for exactly that, and it is executed to near perfection.
The sound, however, is best left off. The music still stand by the ages old “let’s play the same melody a billion times” approach, hoping the player gets through the game before their head explodes. While the music isn’t that bad to begin with, after a while, things get a bit stale. While simple, it can be catchy, but after awhile, it mainly gets a bit irritating, and the sound should just be shut off.
The gameplay is the main draw of the game, and it’s definitely an experience. This is easily one of the most frustrating games in a very long time, especially given the simple play style. Jumping and grabbing things is all Eryi does, and yet everything in the entire world is trying to kill her in some malicious way. From the very beginning of the game, traps such as giant bathtubs, killer flowers, spikes dropping from nowhere and all sorts of other insanity occur, not relenting at any point in the game. Leaving Eryi’s house alone is an exercise in patience, not to mention the fact that not only is the game trying to kill you in level at every moment, but the map between levels will do the same. The goal flags do this as well, always springing a trap before the flag can be reached safely and the level can be ended.
Dying is something that any player of this game should be prepared to do, and very, very often. While entertaining at first (see: “Holy hell, where did that giant spike strip come from?), it gets supremely frustrating after the first few dozen deaths (in the first level). Thankfully, the game operates on infinite lives, though it does poke fun a bit by compiling a negative score after the original three lives are depleted. Seriously, though. Players will die. A lot.
Summary: While very pretty and fun, Eryi’s Action is a hellish nightmare wrapped in a pretty bow. The gameplay is simple but frustrating, compiling a negative life total entering the hundreds throughout the stages. With everything in the entire game, from the maps, to goal flags, to the in-level traps trying to kill you, there is no end to the masochism for every moment this game is played. If players want a difficult game, this is the one. Go for it. But be ready to die all the time, and want to destroy the world after only a few minutes of playing.
