Gaming Under the Influence ~ ABC’s of Video Games

Posted on September 13, 2012 AT 08:00am

NOTE FROM THE WRITER: We are going to work on doing this weekly series adding a once a month video. If you have any suggestions for games you want to see, e-mail the writer at

One thing a lot of the adults have learned is that when you grew up, your Mountain Dew’s and Bawls Energy Drinks have turned into beer and Jack & Coke’s. A lot of us still play the party games, but things have progressed from the days of Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo. Welcome to the world of Gaming Under the Influence, where we introduce you to some craft beers, interesting drink concoctions, and video games that you can turn into drinking games.

Each week we will concentrate on a system and rotate it every week between all consoles and of course PC games. This week we are introducing a non-video game drinking game that involves video game knowledge very extensively.

Week #11 Game-The ABC’s Of Video Game Culture

Sick of playing waterfall, flip cup, and beer pong? Looking for a game you could even play while you’re out at the bar? This is going to be your chance to use all that knowledge and bring it to the table.
Rule #1- Someone starts off with the letter A (doesn’t have to be A, but it makes things easier), then in a circle, you begin name off video game references. These can be names of characters, games, systems, companies, or objects. Refrain from using the trillion different gun names from Borderlands (or items from a MMORPG), that’s just cheating.
For example ~ Atari ~ Borderlands ~ Capcom ~ Dolphin System ~ Eco ~ Famas ~ Garry’s Mod ~ Halo ~ Incredibles ~ Jet Moto ~ Konami ~ Lara Croft ~ Millipede ~ Nailgun ~ Oddjob ~ Portal ~ Q*Bert ~ Resident Evil ~ Saints Row ~ TMNT: Turtles in Time ~ Ultima Online ~ Vietcong (God that was a terrible game) ~ WWE Raw vs. Smackdown ~ XIII ~ Yu-Gi-Oh ~ Zelda
Rule #2- Every time a person stutters or names a duplicate from the current game, that person takes a drink. You can add something extra to it by adding eliminations like playing the game PIG (maybe use the word GAME)
Rule #3- Play until you’ve exhausted all your knowledge, run out of beer, or worse, pass out.
Rule #4- Drink responsibly.

Week #11 Concoction- Tequila Sunrise

Mix in 2 oz of Tequila, 4 oz of orange juice, and a splash of grenadine. Gives you a tangy orange flavor with the tequila that has a sweet ending with the cherry. Definitely used for a nice evening outside (or on the beach), but dammit is it delicious!

Week #10 Loser Shot- 100 Proof Roulette
Get some type of spinning mechanism and place six shot glasses in a circle. Fill each one up with 100 proof alcohol (Cinnamon Schnapps, Vodka, Peppermint Schnapps, Scotch, and Tequila), and let the 6th one be a soda or water. If you get knocked out of the game, take a spin at the wheel, and hopefully you’re lucky!

Week #11 Beer- Stone Brewing Co. ~ Ruination IPA

Probably one of the few IPA’s I can drink, Ruination is one of Stone’s best beers, garnishing a 95 rating from Beer Advocate (over 2500 reviews) and a 97 from the brothers themselves. This is smooth, not too hoppy, and an interesting mixture of a Double and IPA. Don’t get too crazy, as the ABV is 7.7%, over two times a normal beer.

That will do it for this week do it today. We want you to drink responsibly and always have a place to crash or a designated driver if you intend on drinking too much.
