GaymerCon is the first gaming and geek lifestyle convention to focus on LGBTQ culture. The brand new convention is excited to announce their first partnership with a game publisher. EA, gaming’s biggest third party publisher, becomes the first company to announce its involvement with GaymerCon. The company’s support adds to that expressed by the Xbox LIVE team and Robert Khoo of Penny Arcade.
The company has spoken out against homophobia on a number of occasions and has been the target of protests about LGBTQ content in Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. “EA believes that to be truly innovative, you must be inclusive. We are proud to be a part of this event,” said Ginger Maseda, Head of Global Diversity and Inclusion at EA.
GaymerCon Industry Relations Director, Jack DeVries, added, “EA not only publishes some of the best games in the world, but they’re the most progressive company in the industry. We’re thrilled and honored to have them involved in GaymerCon.”
As for GaymerCon, it was started by a diverse team of geeky LGBTQ folks from all walks of life. A successful Kickstarter campaign brought in a grand total of $91,389 from 1,531 backers which completely decimated the goal of $25,000. The convention will be taking place in San Francisco on August 3 and 4 in 2013. Right now, the convention is for age 18+ only and getting a venue is still at the top of the to do list.
