I was recently given the chance to play a little gem called GoSum from the folks over at Aaptek Ltd. Think Words with Friends or Scrabble style gameplay but with numbers. You, and up to four friends, go head to head as math champions. Your goal is to add, subtract, multiply and divide your way to victory before your opponent.
Gameplay is very similar to Scrabble, users are instead given numbers to try to build equations off other players. Double or triple your score for even higher points. Not only is the game fun and addicting, it has the potential to be a teaching tool. What better way for a young one to learn then with a game.
“GoSum was initially developed as a way to teach children about numbers, but quickly moved on to be an addictive and exciting game,” states Colin Thompson, Founder of Aaptek Ltd. “We spent years honing in on a fun yet educational game that could translate the joy of numbers while appealing to an audience of all skill levels. GoSum is truly a project of love that is guaranteed to enchant players regardless of language or experience and we hope that users enjoy playing the game as much as we loved creating it.”
Players start off with six number tiles and two tiles with addition, subtraction, division or multiplication symbols. On the board are double and triple multipliers to make your score higher. Players start out by placing their first equation vertically or horizontally near the green X. Continuing the pattern player 2, 3 or 4 will build off of the others equation. When the game ends, a winner is declared by who had the highest score.
- Take advantage of “bonus” squares to strategically increase scores
- Play 2, 3 or 4-player games that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat
- Show off your high score and compare it to others by viewing the leader-boards
- Login using your Facebook account to show your friends who’s top-dog
The Good: Great learning tool
The Bad: Hard if you suck at math, getting all 0 blocks
The Ugly: Hard when you only have one person to play
