Howard Chaykin Returns With Black Kiss II, A Mature New Title From Image Comics

Posted on June 18, 2012 AT 07:37pm

The 1980′s were a time for pushing boundaries and being a bit on the extreme side, and no one pushed boundaries further in the comic book industry during that time than Howard Chaykin, author of Black Kiss. This series was ahead of its time, melding sex, religion and violence in a controversial manner and bringing about a whole new way to look at how to make a comic.

Chaykin is now bringing the series back, although it now has some new scenery. The original took its main character form L.A. to the Vatican, and now, Black Kiss II, which will be published by Image Comics and will start things off in 20th century New York, a cesspool of filth and violence. Flickering films will be used to help show the spread of an unstoppable evil, and according to Chaykin, the entire idea for the sequel came from an unlikely place.

“…it wasn’t until I was listening to Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, specifically the anthem that closes act one, ‘I’m Still Here,’  that I had any idea how or what to do with a sequel.  So thanks to Image for being there at the right time, and blame Stephen Sondheim.”

The sequel will explain the story behind the original Black Kiss, in a six issue mini-series, in a gritty black and white format. Issue One will be available on August 1st, and will be given a mature rating for graphic depictions of sex.
