IDW has announced they will be publishing a comic series based the highly anticipated movie, Star Trek Into Darkness. Titled Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness, the comics will serve as a prequel to the movie, which will be out summer 2013.

With a story by Roberto Orci, written by Mike Johnson, and artwork by David Messina, the 4-part mini-series will bridge the gap between the events of 2009′s Star Trek and 2013′s Into Darkness. The comic series will be available January 2013.

“We were thrilled by the reception that the original Countdown prequel comic received in 2009,” says Johnson. “We’re excited to be working again with David Messina and the team at IDW to bring fans an all-new original story that leads directly into the next film. Star Trek is back in a big way in 2013!”
