Is a Pirate’s Booty Worth Finding? Borderlands 2 DLC: Captain Scarlett And Her Pirate’s Booty Review

Posted on October 19, 2012 AT 03:01pm

Is the new Borderlands 2 DLC bootylicious? Yeah, I guess it is. Although the pirate-themed campaign can be blasted through in a few short, violent hours, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty as a whole is a damn solid purchase for $9.99 (or $7.50 if you purchased the season pass like a responsible consumer with foresight).

The campaign is the standard Borderlands running and gunning we know and love, but don’t let that dissuade you, there is gear to be nabbed and pirates to shoot in three new zones on Pandora. The main hub and friendly village is Oasis, a decrepit shantytown that looks like a resort on Dead Island fifty years after the outbreak. Your main quest-giver is Hunter S. Thompson-inspired Shade, who takes almost too much pleasure in sending you on missions to help his ‘friends.’ Naturally, as Captain Scarlett blatantly addresses throughout the campaign, in the end you will have to take on the Captain herself in a bloody battle to claim ‘teh phat lootz,’ rinse and repeat.

The environments are nice, but aren’t very memorable.

SUMMARY: Ultimately, it’s more shooting in the desert, but that’s fine, because this DLC is deceptively deep. It features two new raid bosses, a vehicle that sadly can only be used in these zones, and a new currency (Seraph Crystals) that can be farmed to get better than legendary weapons.

Yes, better than legendary.

It’s a good expansion, not great. If you want more Borderlands action then the price/content ratio feels about right. I hope Gearbox implements some sort of end game PVP area, otherwise my level 50′s are only collecting dust on their handsomely outfitted shoulders.

THE GOOD: Moar loot.

THE BAD: A short campaign that can be blasted through in a lazy afternoon.

THE UGLY: The face of Captain Scarlett’s long lost pet…

SCORE: 8.0
