Mario Tennis Open hit store shelves in the United States yesterday, May 20. Mario Tennis Open features both singles and doubles matches playable online through both local wireless and Wi-Fi. The game also includes skill-building Special Games that allow the player to learn specific swings for each character.
Players will be allowed to choose between 10 Mario characters ranging from Mario to Boo. If those characters are not enough, there is the option to use a Mii. After playing matches, coins are obtained. These coins can be used to purchased items such as rackets, sneakers and tennis uniforms. These alter the appearance of the player’s Mii as well as boosting its stats.
Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, said “With new Special Games, wireless multiplayer modes and customization options, Mario Tennis Open offers a new hand-held experience for new and longtime Nintendo fans alike.”
The added online capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS lend much to Mario Tennis Open. The Open Mode matches a player with an online opponent of a similar skill level. Player standings are also available on an online leaderboard. Also, through the Nintendo StreetPass players can show off their customized Mii as well as play against computer controlled versions of other players’ Mii characters.
All in all, Mario Tennis Open sounds like a fun and complete experience for those that are a fans of the Mario series and sports games alike.
