Max: The Curse of Brotherhood Hands-On

Posted on April 1, 2013 AT 01:09pm

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is the upcoming title from Press Play for XBLA. Press Play is known for their previous game, Max and the Magic Marker.

The Curse of Brotherhood is a puzzle based, platformer. Max has grown weary of his little brother and wishes him away for ever, only to have it happen. Now Max finds he is willing to do all it takes to get his brother back. I had the opportunity to play a bit of at PAX East 2013.

The graphics are colorful, 3D and pure cartoon. I found them adorable and endearing. I admit it, I like Max’s giant head.

The gameplay is fairly simple, you have a marker that will allow you to “draw” items on the screen; for example vines, branches, and pedestals. You must find the best use for these items to make your way through each section. Sometimes you will just need a branch to enable you to jump from platform to platform. Other times it will be more complicated, like creating a vine and then figuring out where to cut it to give you the best swing advantage.

The nice thing is, the game didn’t walk you through a tutorial. It didn’t spoon feed me every little detail of the controls. They are pretty straight forward and easy to pick up. The puzzle to challenge your brain and I even “died” a couple of times. If you do fail, you will respawn at the last “checkpoint” thereby reducing the frustration of having to start all over from the beginning of a level.  The game does highlight the area where you need to draw. That makes it a little easier, maybe a little too easy for some people. However, the game isn’t about just drawing and moving on. Sometimes those drawings need to be manipulated. There are “boss” monsters and obstacles that need to be avoided or maneuvered through so it’s not all jumping and swinging.

All and all, it’s a fun, family game.

Max:The Curse of Brotherhood will be coming to XBLA sometime in the Spring 2013.
