Moscow Dash [iOS] Review

Posted on July 1, 2013 AT 01:39pm

Mobile games are the new big thing.  People want easy to play, easy to put down and a good value for their money. Mobile gaming can, and sometimes does, fill this new whole in the gaming world. However, many games just seem like carbon copies of each other and it can be hard to wade through the crap to find the real gems.

Moscow Dash is a gem, in the rough, but still a gem. The game mechanics are simple; place you finger on the screen to move and fire your gun. Watch your ammo levels because while you are reloading, you cannot shoot and the enemies don’t stop coming. There is a timed delay for reloads and it can cost you. Upgrade to better weapons or upgrade the ones you have. Of course, as with the vast majority of mobile games, there is always the option of in-app purchases to level up faster to get that epic gun sooner.

The premise is simple, the people in your city have been turned into Russian demons. At first glance, you are going to notice that the people, though not attractive, sure aren’t very demon-like in appearance. However, they are trying to kill you so shoot them you must. Moscow Dash‘s side-scrolling mayhem reminded me of the bygone era of games like Golden Axe. You kill things, grab dropped items and move to the next section to repeat it all again. This might sound boring and repetitive but surprisingly, it wasn’t. Maybe it is the retro feel of it that makes it fun and that sense of nostalgia makes up for the lack of substance or maybe it really is just a fun game, either way, it is a game fans of the genre should pick up.

There are 9 levels with a total of 70 episodes so plenty of game time for just under $1 and that makes for a pretty good value. It’s easy to pick up and play, yet still challenging. You will die and you will have times when you are “stuck” on episodes but not frustratingly so. The controls work well and I didn’t come across anything that made me think the game was hastily thrown together and not tested thoroughly. The music is pretty awful but it’s that kind of awful that starts to get better the longer you listen. Sort of like those old B movies, so bad they are good. Though not at all original, it is a fun little game.

Score: B-
