Nintendo’s Wii U Press Conference Announcing Price & Release Date to be Streamed Live Thursday at 10 AM ET

MCV reported this morning that Nintendo will be live streaming their Wii U press conference on Nintendo.com this Thursday, September 13th, at 10 AM Eastern Time. They are expected to announce the release date & price point for the console at that time.
Nintendo has been playing this one pretty close to the vest. Retailers taking pre-orders for Wii U games have had December 31st, 2013 as a placeholder release date, and some, including Amazon and GameStop, have had many games priced at $99.99 each. That price point a scare into many potential customers, but like the release date, there’s no real reason to believe it’s anything more than a placeholder.
Since the Wii U is (finally) bringing Nintendo into HD and the controller is (touchscreen aside) much more conventional than that of its predecessor, it looks like third party support will be improving dramatically. Still, until we know the price, it’s hard to gauge just how successful it will be.
The timing is also a little strange as it comes a day after Apple’s own major press event, where they will almost surely be announcing the new iPhone and may be announcing the new “mini” iPad. Will Nintendo be overshadowed in the news cycle? I guess we’ll find out on Thursday morning.
