No Doubt has returned to us with their first single release off their upcoming album “Push and Shove.” The single “Settle Down” has been circling the ‘net in pieces for the last few weeks along with the band’s sneak peek of the music video. Earlier today, the band premiered the entire song to the world.
Sometimes a hiatus as long No Doubt’s (about a decade with no new music, though there was that American tour with Paramore) can really slow the momentum of a group down, or leave fans with a brand new sound they weren’t expecting. It’s fair to say that everyone invested in the comeback of No Doubt was sitting around hypothesizing for a while as to what the album would sound like. Would there be an essence of Gwen Stefani’s solo work? Is there reggae coming back? How about the feel of good old fifties pop? The release of “Settle Down” is almost a comfort to diehard fans; no worries!
Did you know, technically, that “Settle Down” is the follow up single to the band’s 2001 hit “Rock Steady?” Yep, that was their last single. This track was not only a few years in the making, but had a great group of developers behind it. World Music (yes, it’s a genre) producer Diplo assisted Stefani and the boys with the song, plus a few more tracks. Diplo has also helped produce hits for M.I.A. and Beyonce.
“Settle Down” delivers and leaves fans asking for more. It reminds you that No Doubt is back and ready to make moves. The perfect mash up of that new techno-dub step sound and the reggae beats move together in a true harmony while Stefani’s many ranges and sounds keep a steady and invigorating energy. The famous Stefani whine is in the chorus, bringing in high notes that emit a feeling of excitement and that true No Doubt feeling.
With more singles to drop in the coming months, the album itself is set to hit stores (and iTunes) September 25, 2012. That’s not to say we won’t be hearing from the band in the meantime. Tonight at 8 p.m. on E! is the world premiere of the “Settle Down” music video, and this Sunday, July 22 the band will perform at the Teen Choice Awards. June 26 will also be a No Doubt day as they perform on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and Good Morning America the next day. Right before “Push and Shove” becomes available, the band will also be a part of the illustrious line up at the 2012 iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas from September 21-22.
Currently, “Settle Down” is available on iTunes.
