The little box that promises to ‘end console gaming’ is making some serious bank.
The new Android-based $99 game console Ouya has been all over the online community for the past two days. A lot of people are convinced that this new machine, which is currently being funded on Kickstarter, will create a new console model that offers more a more open gaming platform with an emphasis on much cheaper games in our living rooms. Well, it hasn’t even been released and already it’s making waves. Kickstarter recently announced via its blog that Ouya is the fastest project ever to reach 1 million dollars in funding. Ouya hit the mark in just 8 hours and 22 minutes, which is barely enough time for a good night’s sleep. In 24 hours, the project raised 2.5 million USD and at the time of writing it has 3,556,795 USD, far more than its $950,000 funding goal.
The Kickstarter project is still in its infancy and Ouya is probably going to get far more funding. This signals an ambitious start for the new console, which aims to ship with its SDK to make game development far more accessible. Even with its meteoric rise on Kickstarter, Ouya is not without detractors, and it will be very interesting to see how their predictions about the new console play out.
