PAX East 2013: Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut Hands On

Posted on March 22, 2013 AT 08:36pm

When Deus Ex: Human Revolution first came out fans were very vocal about the hits and misses that the game had made. The development team understood those gripes and concerns and took them to heart. I was able to get some hands on time with the upcoming release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut, a revised addition of the title with added features and perks specifically for the Wii U console.

One of the main criticisms the game received previously was regarding the boss fights. The Director’s Cut of the game has been optimized so that bosses can be taken down without a single shot ever being fired. This now allows for the player to completely immerse themselves into a play style, leaving the option of maintaining stealth actions even during boss battles.

Unlike PC and other consoles, the Wii U has no trophy system to speak of. This has been leaving achievement hunters out in the cold as many people use such aspects of gameplay to compare themselves to other gamers. However, the Wii U release will  feature in-game achievements, a first for any title on the system. The GamePad functions as an interactive map throughout the game, letting the player select the level they are on in a building (via GamePad touchscreen) and locate where the enemies are.  The GamePad also doubles as a complete in game digital strategy guide. The guide can be pulled up at anytime during the game and will snap to the exact area you are in, no need to mark a page, or scroll through a table of contents. You get the information you need in the exact place you need it without having to go to Google or buy a third party paperback guide.

Though it was not a feature accessible during the demo I was playing, a Square Enix team member did give me some background on another feature that long time fans will be sure to enjoy.  Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut for the Wii U also has in game commentary. Much like a DVD you can choose to turn the commentary on at the start of your game. At certain points a bubble will pop up and when selected you get to hear something specific about that part of the game. There are roughly fourteen team members from the Deus Ex series featured in the commentary, covering a wide range of topics related to the title and universe.

When I asked Square Enix team members when they expected the game to be out they only told me “very soon”.
