I admit I was not impressed when I saw the first teaser trailer for Saints Row IV a few weeks ago but I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw during the Volition/Deep Silver talk at PAX East.
The one thing everyone can agree on, the team at Volition is either certifiable, or overly creative, and after the invention of the Penetrator in Saints Row III, I am really not sure which. What I do know is they make sandbox-style gaming fun. Ridiculously fun.
The opener the press was shown featured the leader of the Saints, now the President of the United States, wearing a patriotic outfit of star and stripes, ala Apollo Creed from Rocky. Steelport looks a little different as well, a little more dark and twisted. The basic premise of the game is revealed, you and your cabinet (also Saints) have been kidnapped by aliens are are now being held in a virtual Steelport. You must save your cabinet and escape this alternate world.
Have no fear, this is not a serious game. Players will be treated to some new, lighthearted weapons. I’d have to say my favorite so far is the Dubstep gun. Whip that thing out and everything starts to dance. I do mean everything. Even the cars were bouncing. While everyone is distracted grooving to the beat, shoot and kill them all. There is the new Inflato gun. Hit enemies with this one and their heads will inflate like a balloon until they explode. It starts off looking like a “big head” mode until the fatal end.
You will now have super powers. Considering you are trapped in an alien environment, it seems more legit than it sounds. The basic powers are run and jump. You will be able to speed from one end of Steelport to the other in a flash or jump to from building to building with astonishing speed. Combat will add other powers like telekinesis and blast. Each power can be expanded on allowing for multiple ways to decimate your foes. Be aware that you are not the only one with super powers. The aliens beings that are holding you, called the Zin, have their own secret weapon, the Warden. This alien will make your life difficult and can match you power for power so do not expect a walk in the park when confronted with it. Super powers will appear early in the campaign so players will get a lot of time with them. In addition to the four basic powers listed, other powers can be found and used.
Aside from the usual weapon upgrades and customizations, players will be able to unlock weapon “costumes”. What the heck is that, you ask? Literally they are costumes for your weapons. Buy the guitar case costume for your rocket launcher and you will be holding that guitar case on your shoulder, blowing everything in front of you to Hell. There will be approximately three costumes per weapons and an unknown number of skins.
One of my favorite additions that was revealed was the mech suit. Yes, mech suit. Players will find usable mech suits scattered throughout Steelport and eventually, they should be able to unlock it. The mech suit should be handy against the Zin’s Warden.
Fans can also expect to see some characters from previous Saints Row titles and though Steelport will be different, because it’s an alien version of Steelport, it will still be familiar enough to enjoy. It appears there will be one main storyline with multiple side quests and no information was given on the part cars will play in this edition.
Even though Saints Row IV will be released on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC, PC owners can expect more graphical power than its console counterparts. The game is due out August 20, 2013.
Here’s the teaser trailer again, just for a refresher:
