PAX East 2013: Steve Jackson’s Sorcery! Impressions

Posted on March 28, 2013 AT 06:27pm

Steve Jackson’s Sorcery is an upcoming mobile game for iPhone and iPad from inkle. Sorcery is an interactive gamebook that is navigated via a beautifully drawn 3D map.  Your character is completely defined by the choices you make. Force your way into fights or express empathy to those in need, each action will alter the course of your adventure. Choosing to show yourself instead of eavesdrop from the bushes will change the options offered to you in the next bit of text. You can choose to spend your gold and stay at an inn or carry onward into the night and risk running into bandits. The game engine stores every single choice you make, big or small, and uses them to determine the way the citizens of the world view your character.

In essence, your character is whoever you let them become. While predominantly a playable fantasy novel, Sorcery also has a unique combat system where the player can use either brute force or magic to best their foes. Every spell will do something different and some of their effects can be game changers, quite literally! The question isn’t whether you should purchase Sorcery when it comes out (because there’s no question that you should). The question is: what will make you a hero?

The first part of Steve Jackson’s Sorcery!, The Shamuntanti Hills is slated to be available in the App Store in May of 2013. To find out more, visit or follow @inkleStudios on Twitter.
