PAX Prime 2012: Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault

Posted on September 9, 2012 AT 06:23pm

While at PAX, I got  a sneak peek of the new Ratchet & Clank game which is full of action and excitement. In the single-player mode, the player must defend his or her base against waves of enemies that are trying to destroy the base’s six generators. To do so, the player can place various Turrets, Barriers and Mines on the edges of their base to prevent enemies from making it inside through the left and right attack lanes. But the driving force that keeps enemies at bay is the player themselves, the player must explore each level and find the Weapon Pods where they play a simple hacking mini-game to gain new weapons to their arsenal to defeat the incoming invasion forces. This creates an interesting balance of attack or defend where the player is constantly watching their Invasion Detector to see when it’s time to hurry back and defend the home-front. Bolts (the currency of the Ratchet & Clank series) are a major factor in the base management, where switch out one item for another is a great strategy because some enemies are immune or deliberately destroy certain items.

The Insomniac team realized that this type of gameplay could very easily be transferred into the multiplayer world, with two teams each having a base that generates waves of enemies to attack the other. This game mode is done to two alternating phases: the Recon Phase, where each team gets to explore the map and capture Weapon Pods to gain ongoing Bolts and the Squad Phase where the players purchase units to attack the other base. Each base also has a per-round single use Panic Button where their generators are brought underground to be temporarily immune to damage, this allow for some interesting and elaborate strategy on baiting the other team to over spending on a useless attack.  During either phase, the players can battle it out in open combat and if a player dies they are automatically respawned back at their base, this means that each player has to be careful not to start at hacking mini-game if the other team is nearby because it will leave them open to attack.

The multiplayer is available in both 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 in Ranked or Custom play through their match-making system. Full Frontal Assault will be available sometime this Fall for both Playstation 3 and the Playstation Vita on the Playstation Network, and I can’t wait to jump in and do some damage.
