We knew it was coming today, but when was up in the air. Sony’s system firmware is up for download, meeting their self-announced August 28th deadline a little early.

The directional buttons can now control the main screen (via an option), a revised browser, video player improvements, Cross-Controller, iTunes playlists, and general updates.

The big notice for gamers is PSOne Classics, announced for waves. At launch, Sony has confirmed

• Arc the Lad
• Cool Boarders 2
• FINAL FANTASY VII
• Hot Shots Golf 2
• Jet Moto
• Syphon Filter
• Tomb Raider
• Twisted Metal 2
• Wild Arms

Other games may or may not be playable. Personally, Crash Bandicoot was not, but Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness and Arcade Hits: Sonic Wings Special are.
