Puzzle Adventure Gets Cute in Toki Tori 2

Admittedly, I love a good puzzle game. I enjoy trying to solve problems games (and in life) and I pride myself at being fairly proficient in the genre. That being said, I cannot remember that last puzzle game I played that was this adorable.

I had the chance to get a little hands-on with Toki Tori 2 at PAX East 2013. I had not played the original Toki Tori so I had no idea what the game premise was. As I approached the booth, I saw the cutesy pictures and my heart sank, it looked like I was headed for a kids’ game. I was pleasantly surprised.

In Toki Tori 2, you will take on the role of a very “robust” yellow bird that cannot fly. Your beautiful world is being corrupted by a mysterious black goo and it is up to you to find out what it is. Your abilities are limited but you have the local wildlife to help you. Use your whistle or stomp to command the other animals to use their unique abilities. Utilize these abilities to solve the puzzles and make your way through the various levels. Think of this as a puzzle, adventure, platformer and you will have a pretty good idea of the general game mechanics.

While the controls are simple, the puzzles will make you exercise your brain. Sometimes the most obvious solution is not the best one. The one thing I was really struck by was how colorful and “squee” worthy the environments were. I was assured that the puzzles get increasingly difficult as the story progresses. As a parent, this is a game I could easily allow my younger children to play. Some of the puzzles I was able to play might be extremely difficult for a very young child but parents could turn that into “family game” time by gathering together to figure out that puzzles.

Toki Tori 2 was released in the Wii U eShop on April 4th and will be coming to Steam later this year.
