LA-MULANA: Indiana Jones x Castlevania x Dark Souls
Posted on September 8, 2012 AT 04:27pm
Coming soon to WiiWare is a retro-styled 2D platformer with quite a history. Many may attempt to dismiss LA-MULANA upon seeing that it’s ‘yet another’ retro-styled game… Don’t touch that dial, though!
Firstly, LA-MULANA has actually been around since 2005, long before the ‘make the new games look old’ fad was in full swing.
Secondly, the game looks amazing, so it looks like you’d be missing out on a great adventure if you skip this one.
Back in 2005, NIGORO [back then known as GR3] created LA-MULANA in homage to old MSX games, giving it a distinct 8-bit look. It was also hellishly difficult, likely resulting in a few number of busted keyboards. Now, jump to last June. NIGORO rebuilt the game from the ground up for a WiiWare release in Japan, giving it more of a 32-bit-esque look similar to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The game was tweaked, the graphics were refreshed, the music was orchestrated, and then… They lost their European and North American publisher. Recently, they teamed up with EnjoyUp Games for a North American WiiWare release [European release is still TBD, unfortunately]
The visuals look outstanding, and the gameplay appears that it will have players glad that there’s a wrist strap to prevent them from throwing their Wiimotes.

LA-MULANA will be hitting the WiiWare store on Thursday, September 20th for 1000 Nintendo Points [$10 USD].
